This is a great book. It contains a variety of Davis's recent speeches and interviews; thus, it can seem a little repetitive at times, but it held my attention throughout. The repetition also comes from her connecting all these movements and struggles that seem unrelated, but they're very much related through capitalism, imperialism, punitive systems, "security" systems, and privatization of institutions. I've learned a lot about intersectionality through this book and Davis's discussions. It has allowed me to look critically and deeply at social aspects around me.

Freedom Is a Constant Struggle, Ferguson, Palestine, and the Foundations of a Movement by Angela Y. Davis, published in 2016. I first heard of Angela Davis when I was living in California and she was criticized by then Governor Ronald Reagan. This book is a collection of interviews and speeches by Davis. Read it if you want more information about why Colin Kaepernick refused to salute the flag during the playing of our national anthem. I recommend the book.

Our prisons are a means of controlling people of color and also a source of profit to the prison-industrial complex.

"The global prison-industrial complex is continually expanding as can be seen from the example of G4S*. Thus, one can assume that its profitability is rising. It has come to include not only public and private prisons (and public prisons, which are more privatized than one would think, are increasingly subject to the demands of profit) but also juvenile facilities, military prisons, and interrogation centers. Moreover, the most profitable sector of the private prison business is composed of immigrant detention centers. One can therefore understand why the most repressive anti-immigrant legislation in the United States was drafted by private prison companies as an undisguised attempt to maximize their profits."

*GS4 operates prisons around the world and is the 2nd or 3rd largest private employer in the world after Walmart.

Davis continues to teach, this time in a collection of interviews and speeches from 2013-2015. What she does well as always, is explain concepts and how they are interrelated. She doesn't talk about Ferguson, prison abolition, or even Dr King in a vacuum but links them in a larger framework of struggle, across people's and continents. She also, maybe more importantly gets the reader to dig deeper, study more, and question more.

Now where to begin...

I was a little worried reading the comments, after I had placed my order, that I would be disappointed. As others have noted, it was not quite what they expected. When I opened my package, I was pleased that everything looked great, with no damage at all! The books were tightly packed within the set (as most good book sets come to prevent the books from moving around and ruining the edges). The quality of the design doesn't seem to be lacking to me-as it was what I was expecting from a small paperback. I was not searching for fancy books to line my bookshelfs, but rather fantastic stories to inspire my dreams. I feel like I got a great bunch of small books for less than a dollar a piece! I usually buy old classics that are falling apart at thrift stores and used book stores for more than that. It is an awesome introduction to authors that I have yet to read and a great addition to some of my favorites! Now where to begin...

Felt compelled to comment about the set which I have been anticipating for months and was delivered today. I love it! Unlike previous reviewers who talk about the physical appearance I have more imagination than they do than to dismiss this wonderful project of Penguin's on such odiously superficial grounds. I also purchased a gorgeous Penguin tote that I will use to carry my books piecemeal as I make my way through this wonderful collection.

Accurate prediction

As Froude predicted, we gave them self government. As Froude predicted, the whites mostly fled. And as Froude predicted, everything went to hell in a handbasket.

Froude was nostalgic for the good old days of colonialism, when colonials were pirates and brigands. This empire stuff is no good he tells us, due to meddling do-gooders in Whitehall out of contact with reality. He does not quite say empire is a communist plot, since communists were not on the horizon back then, but this modern reader was apt to anachronistically feel that empire was a communist plot.

Froude's attitude to empire is well expressed by this poem, which he quotes in full

Oh ! England is a pleasant place for them that's rich and high,
But England is a cruel place for such poor folks as I ;
And such a port for mariners I'll never see again
As the pleasant Isle of Aves beside the Spanish main.

There were forty craft in Aves that were both swift and stout,
All furnished well with small arms and cannon all about ;
And a thousand men in Aves made laws so fair and free
To choose their valiant captains and obey them loyally.

Then we sailed against the Spaniard with his hoards of plate and gold,
Which he wrung with cruel tortures from Indian folks of old ;
Likewise the merchant captains, with hearts as hard as stone,
Who flog men and keelhaul them and starve them to the bone.

Oh ! palms grew high in Aves, and fruits that shone like gold,
And the colibris and parrots they were gorgeous to behold,
And the negro maids to Aves from bondage fast did flee
To welcome gallant sailors a sweeping in from sea.

Oh ! sweet it was in Aves to hear the landward breeze
A swing with good tobacco in a net between the trees,
With a negro lass to fan you while you listened to the roar
Of the breakers on the reef outside which never touched the shore.

But Scripture saith an ending to all fine things must be,
So the king's ships sailed on Aves and quite put down were we.
All day we fought like bull dogs, but they burnt the booms at night,
And I fled in a piragua sore wounded from the fight.

Nine days I floated starving, and a negro lass beside,
Till for all I tried to cheer her the poor young thing she died.
But as I lay a gasping a Bristol sail came by,
And brought me home to England here to beg until I die.

And now I'm old and going : I'm sure I can't tell where.
One comfort is, this world's so hard I can't be worse off there.
If I might but be a sea dove, I'd fly across the main
To the pleasant Isle of Aves to look at it once again.

Much better than I thought

I delayed buying this book because of the initial negative reviews it received, and I regret following the advice of those reviewers. Several people suggested that the girls aren't allowed to have "true emotions," and that they put a falsely positive spin on all of their relationships and the situations they write about. I actually found the opposite to be true of this book.

I sometimes feel that on the TV show and in other Duggar interviews/books, it does seem difficult to relate to their lives, even for other Christians, because of the strict rules they've set for themselves and their behavior. I agree with their philosophies on a lot of things, but I'm not ready to wall myself off from secular society, including its media or its citizens. I have long suspected that the true Duggar life is both more political and also less closed off from society than we see on the TV show, and I found this book to finally give us insight into a more accurate depiction of their lives.

As Jill is on the verge of getting married to a man who didn't grow up in the Gothard culture, I think we have further evidence to show that the Duggar family isn't as judgmental or rigid as other reviewers of this book are leading us to believe. The family itself deviates from multiple Gothard stances, and I believe they're proponents of the idea that as long as Jesus and the Bible are your center, you can take or leave the rest of it. I think this book sticks with that message.

The girls write about having friends outside of the family, political issues (as other reviewers mentioned), and issues with siblings that cut deeper than "aw shucks, Jedidiah took my last jellybean but I was glad to bless him and forgave him instantly." I think that above all though it provides really solid advice to young parents who want to raise children within a Jesus-centered household. Honestly, even for people who aren't religious, as a parenting book, the girls give good tips on supporting siblings, being kind, and showing respect for their parents.

Jim Bob and Michelle don't look at the kids as an "us vs. them," and I think this outlook speaks to the clear level of respect they continue to receive, even from their adult children. This book helps to articulate the steps they took to make that respect their reality.

I definitely agree that this book isn't for kids, and I think that marketing it to "girls," really means "young ladies like the authors." I think the age bracket that would benefit the most from this book are ages 16+ (those entering the stage of potentially having a serious relationship) and also young adults who are starting the journey of parenting. I do think that there are mature themes in the book that might be inappropriate for a younger audience, but I feel that as with any media, parents should screen it first with their particular child in mind.

I was pleasantly surprised with this read as it was the first of the Duggar materials that showed me their ability to bridge their values with their participation in the outside world. Once again, I HIGHLY recommend it to Christian parents or parents who are interested in avoiding sibling bickering, back talking, or the "friend/foe" culture so many families find themselves in of parents vs. children.

Book was high quality and well made. I enjoyed reading about the Duggar girls and their particular lifestyle. If living a God-centered life offends you then I recommend another book. Content was appropriate and their stories were charming and heartfelt. Highly recommend

This book does a decent job detailing the economic ventures of the Mormon pioneers, mostly in Utah. While the book occasionally uses obvious pro-Mormon language, still it serves as an accurate and objective accounting of Mormon economic activity--compiling several details that may be challenging to find elsewhere.

After reading this book its hard to not puzzle over the irony that a group of people who today are so fiscally conservative and proud of their American capitalism were once the most socialist leaning culture of any significant size in the United States.

The Greatest Book on Mormon History

I love this book more than I can possibly express in a review such as this. The unique approach taken by the author--economic motivations and considerations as the point from which to view Mormon history in Deseret--works better than any other approach I've encountered. This book opened my eyes to the awful famines and unjust government persecution endured by my ancestors as they sought to built a godly homeland in the desert. I recommend this book without reservation to anyone who really wants to learn about the toil and triumphs of those who tholed in Deseret.

Proves we "modern" Saints have lost the vision of Zion

I already knew that the early Saints had done remarkable things in the realm of economics - attempted the United Orders, set up very prosperous cooperatives, and launched the Zions Central Boards of Trade (which would help us immensely today).

However, Great Basin Kingdom gave me a clearer understanding of how intensely the early Saints worked to realize Zion. They put us to shame! We TALK about building Zion, they DID it! The colonization effort with its egalitarian methods of dividing up property in new settlements struck me how united they were - we are so conditioned today by Babylon's economic values, I doubt we are humble enough to do what they did. (We should repent).

This book opened my eyes (even wider) to the reality that Zion is not just a spiritual endeavor, it is economic as well. The author also verified my suspicion that the polygamy raids were a smoke screen for the Church's enemies to destroy the economic powerhouse we were building.

So important...

As a physician, I confront issues surrounding brain death with my patients and their families on a daily basis. This complicated subject with all its implications regarding bioethics has frustrated me for years. This comprehensive and well written book has been incredibly helpful in clarifying so many of the personal ethical dilemmas my colleagues and I constantly face. I am so thankful that someone has taken on the task of putting this important subject into the historical and present day context that it deserves. Dr. Belkin has accomplished this task at the highest of scholarly levels!
