All of the books that I ordered arrived just like they said they would. Out of all of the books that I have purchased, this book is the best book. As a Behavioral Health Nurse, I facilitate group therapy sessions (for a Partial Hospitalization Program) and like to keep the class interesting. This book has allowed for topics to be discussed in a variety of ways keeping the topics interesting. Patient's are real excited to participate in the activities on what I would like to say is fun Friday. This gives the patient's the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of the subject matter. The spiral bounding is excellent, but what also is a plus for this book is that it comes with a CD to print out the necesary pages instead of bending the book. This is the best investment that I have made in a long time regarding a book purchase.

The activities can also be incorporated into psychoeducation sessions with clients who are minimally responsive.

Solid Survey of Political Thought!

In a lengthy and readable manner, White (Arizona State University) provides a capable introduction to major political philosophers in the Western tradition. Generally, the text follows a traditional approach by surveying seminal thinkers and texts, but the author, influenced by recent efforts to place political philosophy "within the context of a more comprehensive moral, philosophical, or religious point of view" (p. 414), provides a supplemental basis of analysis for the reader to contemplate as well. The underlying argument of the text is most laudable, but insufficient use is made of the recent scholarship that most closely conforms to this mode of interpretation.

As a second edition, the book includes a new chapter on Cicero, and new sections on Marsilius of Padua and John Stuart Mill. The chapter on Cicero addresses the interconnectivity between reason and morality in Cicero's political thought. Additional contributions of the text are the author's attempt to introduce, and then explicate, the "enduring issues" of political philosophy as a framework (pp. 13-17) for better understanding contemporary politics, and the thoughtful treatment of Christianity's role in shaping the political thought of the West (chapter 6).

Getting Real, Volume 4

Although there are more songs in the first three real books (The Real Book: Sixth Edition, The Real Book - Volume II (C Instruments): C Instruments 2nd Edition (Fake Book), The Real Book - Volume III: C Instruments, 2nd Edition) than I'll ever learn to play in two lifetimes, when this book came out, I rushed to get my copy. The reason is simple: with the majority of the standards available in the other three books, here we start getting into some more "fringe" or hard to find material, but even more important than that, this volume includes a number of (what I consider) glaring absences from the first volumes, as well as more recent material that probably didn't make it into earlier volumes because of copyright issues and such. Some examples of the first category of songs include: Days of Wine and Roses, On Green Dolphin Street, and Just Friends (among others). Some from the latter category include all the Mancini and Gershwin material: Baby Elephant Walk, Peter Gunn Theme, A Foggy Day, and Summertime. The paper quality is exceptional as ever, and although the font seems a little smaller, it is still easy to read with space enough for notes and notations while learning and playing the tunes. As always, the spiral bound format is easy to handle and convenient. I'm sure there are lots of owners of one or more of the first three volumes who are thinking that this one won't add much to their repertoire, but like the three volumes before it, I'm confident in recommending it and giving it a five star rating, as I expect there are plenty of songs here that any musician will enjoy having quick and easy access to. There really is something for everyone and that makes this book a winner.

Wonderful! And what a bargain!

If you think these guys might be slowing down a little after 3 volumes, think again. The good folks at Hal Leonard have stuffed this book with 400 pages of top-notch standards and jazz tunes, with no duplications from prior volumes.

Expect nice changes, good calligraphy and paper and a GREAT selection of songs. Just sit down at the piano and easily play through these tunes. You'll quickly gain new-found respect for some chestnuts and discover some (many) new favorites. Some of the tunes include two-staff harmonies and written-out bass lines, and others are helpfully annotated.

Spiral bound (!) and ridiculously priced. Highly recommended.

It feels like almost a lifetime ago when THE REAL BOOK (*THE* as in Volume 1) was sold "behind the counter" at select music shops.
Buying it had an air of naughtiness, yet signified both the hipness of the music shop in carrying it, and legitimacy of you as a musician in buying it.

The book, of course, was not perfect, in fact, early editions were laden with ridiculous errors, whereas as time past, sheets began to improve.

Some years back, Hal Leonard took over the book -- legitimizing it, putting it out at a reasonable price, and further developing the series.

Lead sheets, by nature, are merely blueprints of given arrangements -- to declare any leadsheet "perfect" would be silly, but to say that some fakebooks are more functional than others, in my opinion would be a fair statement. To that extent, this book deserves 5 stars, in that, whether or not I agree with every change, it definitely, like V.1-3 of the series, is "on the go" functional.

Of course, Volumes 1-3 always existed, IV to the best of my knowledge is new; however, it includes many tunes that were omitted from earlier versions of the legal edition. DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES, ON GREEN DOLPHIN STREET, DOODLIN', A FOGGY DAY, NIGHT AND DAY, FLAMINGO, JUST FRIENDS, RELAXIN' AT CAMARILLO (Parker), SUNNY and SUMMERTIME are included... as are excellent sheets to numerous tunes that have appeared in other fakebooks... Most welcome by myself are Mr. Lucky, Mr. Wonderful, Our Day Will Come, That's Life, Parker's Mood, Azure Te, and Going out of my Head.

There are some fun as hell tunes too, like THE PINK PANTHER, THE "IN" CROWD, The Themes to both I Love Lucy and Johnny Carson, Peter Gunn, The Sermon and more.

Tunes ranging from Porter Standards, Modern Jazz, Bebop and even some pops, for example "I Shot The Sheriff" are included, also a beautiful ballad, which in my opinion James Brown used to knock the heck out of "IF I RULED THE WORLD" are included.

Sorry, I can't name them all.

All in all -- this is a fantastic addition to, what I believe is THE must have fake book collection for musicians who don't have photographic memory and a repertoire of 100s/1000s of tunes, and also need sheets that are readable and functional enough to be pulled on the spot.

FYI -- most players will be aware of this, but a FAKE BOOK, unless otherwise specified, does not contain scores or lyrics (*in most cases.) These are sheets that contain the chord changes and melody in an easy form to allow gigging musicians to be able to perform and arrange them on the spot. If you're looking for written out sheet music, the REAL BOOK is not for you... and definitely don't purchase it, and embarrass yourself by writing a bad review. Every semi-pro, pro and a billion amateur but Jazz trained musician will be laughing their butts off at you.

About the Author
Richard Penner, professor at the Hotel School at Cornell University since 1970, teaches hotel planning, development, and interior design. Experienced in both architecture and hotel management, he spent year-long sabbaticals with international designer Hirsch Bedner Associates (Santa Monica, CA) and the architecture group of Starwood Hotels and Resorts (White Plains, NY). A graduate of Cornell University, with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture, he is the author of four books―two coauthored with the late Walter Rutes, who was the lead author on the first edition of Hotel Design, Development, and Planning. In 1992 Hospitality Design magazine honored Penner with its Platinum Circle Award for contributions to hospitality design as an author and teacher. He has presented seminars on development, hotel planning, and interior design throughout the world. He has served a three-year term as Director of Graduate Studies at the Hotel School, has been conference coordinator for design seminars at the European Meeting on Hotel Interior Design in Rimini, Italy, and has chaired five Hospitality Design Roundtables sponsored by the Center for Hospitality Research at Cornell.

Lawrence Adams, AIA, Vice President of ForrestPerkins, has managed and directed the design of large-scale development projects at major architectural and planning firms over the last thirty-five years. A global authority on hotel and resort design, Mr. Adams served as adjunct faculty at New York University for nine years teaching graduate courses on Hotel Design and Development. He also co-authored Hotel Design, Planning and Development (2001) with Walter Rutes and Richard Penner. Among his most significant projects are the New York Four Seasons Hotel, the RIGHA Royal Hotel, Chambers Hotel, The Westin Beach Resort & Spa, Fort Lauderdale, and the National Headquarters of the Marine Corps Reserve.

Stephani K. A. Robson joined the faculty at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration in 1993. A specialist in hospitality design psychology, she has contributed numerous research articles to academic journals including the Journal of Environmental Psychology and the Cornell Hospitality Quarterly and frequently writes for trade journals on topics related to hospitality design and development.

MUST HAVE FOR HOTEL DEVELOPER AND ARCHITECT !

The book have complete information about designing & developing various types of hotels. From urban hotel to convention hotel.
It goes into detail in designing guestroom, public spaces, back of the house, etc, as well as covered new technology in hospitality & construction.
It's also includes lots of pictures and hotel layout.

I bought the second edition. It was published in 2012, so many information & hotel examples are up to date. The book appearance & layout like a college text book.
I think it's intended for college class cause the author is a Cornell professor.

This book becomes one of my reference book. Highly recommended reading for developing a hotel.

An excellent guide on how to use Ruby for what it does best

Manipulating text is one area where Ruby excels, and this book really plays to that advantage. The author states that any text processing script can be broken into three stages: first you get the text, then you apply some kind of transformation to it, then output the results. I like the way that the book is organised into three parts that go into great detail on each of these three stages.

Part 1, Aquiring text, starts with the basics: reading from files or from standard input. And quickly moves on to how to extract data from CSV files, and scraping data from HTML files using the Nokogiri library.

Part 2, Modifying and Manipulating Text, opens with an introduction to regular expressions (does every programming book have a chapter on regex?). Then it gets really meaty with a chapter on writing parsers, and another on natural language processing. I particularly enjoyed the section where the author demonstrates how to use the Parslet library to parse a Rich Text Format file.

Part 3, Writing Text, starts again with the basics: writing to standard output, standard error, and to a file. Then it goes on to discuss serialising data to JSON, XML, or CSV formats. And the last chapter uses ERB to render templates into text files. Anyone who knows rails will be familiar with the ERB templating language, but I found it refreshing to see this used outside of a rails context.

If you want to learn Ruby as your first programming language, this is not the first book that you should read on Ruby, but it would be a good choice as your second book. Or if you already know how to program and you want to add Ruby to your repertoire, then this would be a great place to start. I've been working with Ruby for 8 years and I picked up lots of new stuff. I wish I could have read this book years ago!

Starting with text processing? This book is for you!

Ruby has powerful libraries to get you started with text processing even if you are not familiar with the language. This book gives you a very detailed introduction into the ETL (Extract-Transform-Load) workflow, each one having its own part in the book. At the end you get a quick introduction on how to run apps if you really just get started.

And if you ask where could you use text processing I would say website scraping as an example. And you'll find tools described in this book to accomplish your task.

Ruby for UNIX CLI Lovers

Rob Miller makes a compelling case for Ruby as an elegant and productive text processor. The text leaves me convinced this was probably one of Matz's top design goals for the language. Ruby is absolutely a cleaned-up, sane Perl.

I like that Rob carefully places Ruby in relation to UNIX coreutils and demonstrates many organic CLI workflows, with each tool used appropriately. I also appreciate, due to the very lightweight and readable Ruby syntax, the gentle introduction to parsers and NLP. This could provide the newcomer a conceptual foundation before venturing into more industrial strength tools (in Scala, Java, Python, Go, what-have-you).

Rob is a talented writer and I look forward to more from him. One "star" subtracted due to a formatting snafu in my edition that is not representative of the normal high quality of this publisher.

This was my ignorance in that I did not realize that Mr. Lincoln did not write a complete biography; however, I did enjoy reading the small little book and I did pass it on to my son who is a history buff.

Otherwise, the educator might meet with a bit of disappointment: material covered in other more detailed, well-know biographies
of this most extraordinary U.S. President.
