the book is very nice.

Beware of the ebook !! the table and figure could be very small so that the small font cannot be read.
The book content is almost completely re-written. Some authors in the previous edition were replaced.
The comprehensive (probably too comprehensive) chapter regarding immunomarkers by DM Knowles was no longer there.
As whole, the book is very nice.

About the Author
Bob de Wit is director of the Strategy Academy, an international research and educational institution focusing on strategy, leadership and business innovation issues (www.strategy-academy.org). He is also managing director of Strategy Works, an international strategy consulting and coaching firm that facilitates boardroom decision-making and guides companies through processes of strategic renewal (www.strategy-works.com).

Bob has a BA in Psychology from the University of Utrecht, an MBA from the Delft University of Technology and a Ph.D. in management from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. From 1985 to 1996 he was a professor of strategic management at the Rotterdam School of Management. Since 1996 he has held a chair in Strategy at the Maastricht School of Management, where he also served as the Associate Dean for research from 1997 and 2001. Bob is an active member of the Strategic Management Society, where he serves as chairman of the Interest Group `The Practice of Strategy¿, as member of the annual conference paper review committee, and as a member of the McKinsey Best Paper Prize committee.

Prof. Ron Meyer is Professor of Corporate Strategy at TiasNimbas Business School, Tilburg University. Ron studied Political Science at the University of Alberta in his native Canada. After receiving his bachelor's degree he moved to the Netherlands and got his MBA and PhD at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. From 1987 to 1998 he was a professor of strategic management at the Rotterdam School of Management / Erasmus Graduate School of Management. During this period he taught strategy in 15 countries, at universities and in companies, and acted as consultant to a wide variety of firms. For two years he was also Associate Director of RSM, in charge of managing the MBA Program. Since 1998, at the Center for Strategy & Leadership and its predecessors, Ron has combined boardroom consultancy work with in-company trainings and applied management research. As consultant he works with many top international companies on such topics as corporate strategy, business innovation, strategic alliances and strategies for growth. As trainer he has given seminars and training courses to hundreds of companies around the world and lectured at more than 30 universities. He has (co-)authored numerous articles and books, among which the internationally leading textbook on strategic management, Strategy - Process, Content, Context: An International Perspective. Over 250.000 copies have been sold so far and the book is used at more than 200 business schools around the world. In 2005 the 2nd edition was published of Strategy Synthesis: Resolving Strategy Paradoxes to Create Competitive Advantage, while his latest book, Mapping the Mind of the Strategist, was published in 2007.

For my MBA study I bought four good-rated strategy books from Amazon. Luckily that book was suggested as the main text book by our course professor . As you can see, it has a limited number of reviews in Amazon, which left me really wondering. I believe this is one of the top best business strategy and business thinking books ever written. I greatly enjoyed this book. Not too in depth about the history of advertising the author provides background as to the sea change moments over 100 years of industry. Also reads fast and well paced.

Very impressive history of an interesting side effect of our information age

We often refer to our civilization as the information age. Maybe a slightly more descriptive metaphor would be our advertising sponsored “free” information age. Tim Wu does an outstanding job of mapping out the history leading to this “free” information age. He starts a long time ago when Benjamin Day started a newspaper in New York City in the 1830s based on a revolutionary model at the time of being funded primarily by print advertising. Unlike his competitors, he sold his daily at a big loss. But, he more than made up for it by advertising. He started the business by creating unsolicited ads in his newspaper to trigger the interest of the merchants he had advertised on their behalf without their asking. Tim Wu goes on meticulously on detailing a succession of pioneers that will essentially leverage derivatives of this pioneering advertising sponsored business model onto radio, TV, internet, and ultimately mobile. By the end the advertising merchants have created trading networks that make hedge fund nanotraders seem like boy scouts on bicycles. Indeed, such advertising networks make so many near instant decisions to route whatever the most relevant ad is delivered to the highest commercial bidder on monitor and screens of all sizes.

At almost any time there is a tension or trade-off between getting wonderful information services for much below cost or entirely free and essentially suffering from advertising pollution that impairs our brain’s focus to achieve what we were meant to do on this earth.

Tim Wu feels the above issue has reached a boiling point. He is not alone. Even technology industry leaders have taken that position. In one of the last chapters, he focuses on Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, who championed this position. He indicated that the advertising invasion is really impairing customer experiences including underperformance (in terms of speed, video-streaming quality, etc.) of all related information appliances when surfing the internet. Along those lines Tim Cook delivered ad-blockers that are readily available on all Apple’s devices.

Tim Cook’s position is both laudable and self-serving (and not necessarily in a bad way, but a smart way). When you think of the four major behemoths of the technology field: Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple; they increasingly overlap and compete with each other over various domains be it cell phones, cloud servers, operating systems, and numerous other software platforms. But, when you look at the funding sources the first two (Google and Facebook) are essentially dominant advertising agencies. Meanwhile, Amazon is the major retail clearinghouse middleman who also benefits a great deal from advertising. On the other hand, Apple is from a funding source standpoint in a silo earning a buck the old fashion way by selling mainly hardware (I Phones, I Pads, I Watch) and services (music, apps). It does not make money from advertising. So, for Tim Cook to lead and facilitate the campaign of the ad-blockers is a direct arrow at the advertising based business of his main competitors.

In the last chapter, Tim Wu goes on that we should regain our consciousness and our focus. We should think more deliberately about the choice we make. Do we want to keep on selling ourselves for “free” to be part of massive audiences that are very lucratively marketable by the Big 3 (Facebook, Google, Amazon)? I have recently experienced what it is like. I just recently got a mini I Pad, a really cool little machine. And, I remember attempting to read a serious article that demanded focus in order to be understood. The mini I Pad screen is plenty big for reading. However, it seems that nearly three fourth of the screen was wasted on ads in various forms. And, I literally could not practice the type of slow attentive reading I needed to understand the article. I quickly gave up and read the article a few days later on a printed copy with no problem and a lot more enjoyment and retention. So, I should consider the ad-blocker apps as many of you have already. And, Tim Wu’s nearly spiritual call at the end does promote such attitude. Let’s reclaim the independence of our brain. Let’s focus. Let’s maximize the outcome of our respective destinies.

Tim Wu’s position is really attractive and nearly unquestionable. Could one really take the opposite position? Let’s waste our time being distracted by an unending stream of advertisement and related vapid entertainment and distraction and don’t leave a legacy whatsoever of our passage on earth. Ok, that’s not a very good rebuttal of Tim Wu’s position.

However, if we look at the underlying economics the underlying argument may get more complicated. Let’s say the Big 3 entirely loose out their ad revenues. And, they do not make enough from selling various apps and games to cover their costs. They actually would have to charge for their “free services.” They could use different models such as monthly subscriptions or paying for each unit of services. Given that, how much would you be willing to pay monthly to maintain access to your Facebook profile and its related networking activities? How much would you be willing to pay for one single Google search? Similarly, how much would Facebook and Google have to charge to effectively cover their lost advertising revenues? Those questions become a chicken and the egg issue because the price affects the demand. For “free” those services have nearly infinite demand. But, for any realistic price the demand for all those “free” services would crater. Such economic questions most often render problems or issues much more complicated than otherwise. This economic conundrum was not Tim Wu’s objective when writing “The Attention Merchants.” And, that is perfectly fine. His book probably packs in a more effective punch by focusing on the tension between “The Attention Merchants” and the self-actualization of our own focused consciousness.

A year later I am still using this book as a reference

First, I should say that I was a student of Dr. Brown's and took his class in which we used this book as the text. But, I still find the information contained in this book useful even now that I am no longer a student. I found this area of psychology very applicable to my daily life, and I am surprised that this is the only book on self-psychology available on the market. He writes in a clear, entertaining manner and he makes the concepts easy to understand. This is a valuable reference to me, and I am certain it will continue to be as I enter graduate study in psychology.

Scholarly, insightful, and accessible

Jonathon Brown has created a book that works in both the home and the classroom. Written as a text for upper-level psychology classes in self-psychology, it manages to span the usual gap between 'informative' and 'engaging.' An excellent read for the interested layperson and an invaluable resource for the academic. Bravo!

Clear, yet dry.

I took this class (i.e., self), and is was really nice, I learned a lot about myself. Like I mentioned it is dry and I find some disconnect in the fifth and sixth chapters, but overall it does a good job of communicating the aspects of self. Remember future class takers, self is not personality it is identity with a hint of personality and a dash of motivation. lol

Exceeded My Expectations In Every Way

I have done three marathons over the last 15 years. I'm not what I would call a "marathoner", but I've always enjoyed the challenge and reward of the distance. Unfortunately, I've never enjoyed much success at the distance. I've never felt like I was properly prepared and my marathons showed it. My finishes have always been weak and my times, in the 3:40 to 4:10 range, have been disappointing.
With a 4th attempt at a marathon coming up this June, I purchased this book in the hopes that I could finally turn in a good marathon and qualify for the Boston Marathon.
This book has exceeded my expectations in every way. Every chapter is full of information and examples of things I've either failed to do in the past, done that I shouldn't have, or done at the wrong level of intensity. Exercise physiology, rather than running lore or other worthless information, packs each chapter. The authors do a wonderful job of explaining what happens to your body when you do things right and when you do things wrong. You come away not only understanding what you should do, but why you should do it. You learn why various types of running help and why those same types can take away from your goals if done improperly or at the wrong time/level. You also get an entire book that focuses on running 26.2 miles, meaning that you don't have to skim through chapters on the 5K, 10K, or other distances to pick out the information that is meaningful to you. Along these same lines, the authors talk about why certain types of training that are very useful for runners in other distances really shouldn't be a focus in your marathon preparation (and, of course, why they shouldn't). The book covers various types of running workouts, nutrition, hydration, recovery, race tactics, running economy, and training schedules. For the various workouts, it does a wonderful job of explaining each type of workout, what it does to aid you in achieving your goal marathon, and why.
I actually considered waiting until after my marathon in June, just so I could expound the virtues of this book with concrete evidence that what it has to say works, but I just couldn't wait. If you're at all interested in going from an average marathoner to an advanced marathoner, this is the book you need. I've read the entire thing in about a week (which is saying something for me) and plan to begin reading it again today, just to make myself a "cheat sheet" this time of the many things in the book that loudly spoke to me. Of the 5 books I've owned on preparing for the marathon, this is the best one by far!

Great book if you want to train seriously for a personal best

I really can't say enough good things about this book. I'll start by saying that having just followed the "below 70 miles per week" training plan pretty faithfully, I just lowered my personal best in the marathon by 19 minutes, breaking 2:50 for the first time. I also actually enjoyed running the marathon, right to the finish, did not hit "The Wall", and sustained my highest weekly mileage ever without sustaining injury. I attribute a lot of this success to this book.

You need to be fairly serious about training to benefit from this book - the training plans are best suited for those who are willing to do 60 miles per week or more. (The 70+ mile per week plan contains a section "When 93 miles per week just aren't enough"). But the book places a strong emphasis on recovery and nutrition, which I think were critical in allowing me to increase mileage without getting hurt, sick, or run-down. And you certainly don't need to be elite - just willing and able to find the time and energy for a fairly large amount of training.

There are a lot of things to get right in a marathon, and almost all of them seem to be addressed here: all the different types and intensities of training, how to make sure you recover on your "easy" days, how to replenish carbohydrate stores after long runs, how to taper, race day strategy, carbo-loading, hydration, and even how to recover intelligently in the month after the race. Impressively, the book manages to cover all these aspects while being readable and quite easy to comprehend and remember.

A lot of ideas in this book are quite similar to Daniel's Running Formula (another good book) but tuned specifically for the marathon and made a bit easier to digest because it only covers that one event.

A Multiple Marathons training plan. For runners who wish to tackle more than the standard yearly spring and fall marathon plan, the book details methods for racing marathons as close as four weeks apart.
A sidebar in each chapter which profiles a world class marathoner. These tales from the trenches illustrate how some of the principles of marathon training are applied in real life.
Practical advice about how to balance high commitment marathon training with the rest of a "normal" life. Since not all of us can make a living winning prize money in road races, the authors present practical tips for incorporating high mileage training into the rest of your busy life.
An entertaining writing style. The best line of the book comes on page 205 where the authors warn about trying to run back-to-back marathons in less than 4 weeks:
Your main concern should be about recovery, recovery, and more recovery not only from your first marathon but also from the lobotomy that led you to come up with this plan. Despite its many strengths, the book has two minor drawbacks: Hill training is glossed over. Hills are an essential part of almost any marathon training program. The authors acknowledge this, but they aren't specific about where, when, and how hills can be incorporated into a training plan.
The core strength training and flexibility training sections are brief. Specific diagrams illustrating some of the exercises written about would have been very helpful. These drawbacks, however, pale in comparison to all of the "good stuff." To repeat, this book is a must read.
