Introduction

    When you’re the person who knows about wine among your friends and family,
you’re asked a lot of questions: What should I order on a date? How do I choose wine for my
wedding? What goes with meat loaf?
    A couple of years ago, I arrived home to find my roommate sprawled on the couch looking miserable.
    “What’s wrong?” I asked.
    “I got dumped. Again.” I headed to the freezer to look for ice cream. “What wine goes with a bad breakup?” she moaned.
    That day, the answer turned out to be cheap rosé, because that’s what I had, but from then on, I began thinking about pairing wine and beer with situations and feelings, rather than just sauces and salads.
    Food & Wine has you covered for that heritage pork roast with the price tag that made you wince at the register at Whole Foods, but what about the blind date you’re dreading and anticipating in equal measure? And what should you sip while Google-stalking your high school crushes? You definitely need an adult beverage for that. Inspired by my roommate’s dilemma, I started writing columns for The Hairpin that paired wine and other beverages with situations ranging from first dates to road trips, and readers responded to them in
a way I never expected. I realized that people really need a way to talk about wine and beer that reflects how we live now. No one’s coming home after a long day at work and making a complicated poached fish and beurre blanc and pairing it with the perfect Chablis. We’re drinking while camping, or celebrating getting promoted with our friends, or solo-sipping on the couch while watching trashy television and eating greasy Thai food, or attempting home hair color in a really ugly bathrobe.
    In this book, I hope to give you some inspiration and helpful information, but mostly I want to give you the freedom to have fun with what you’re drinking. On a similar note, this is the kind of book you can dip into at any point, depending on your interests at that moment. No need to start right at the beginning and dutifully take notes—if you’re drinking for fun and enjoyment, there’s no need to be slavish about it. If you want a little information on how to taste beer and wine or what the heck kind of glassware to buy, start with “The Basics.” But feel free to skip to the relevant chapters to figure out what to order on your date with that promising, but maybe slightly too bro-y guy from Tinder (page 38) or what to drink when you’ve finally finished your Ph.D. (page 94).
    While these pairings are all meant to be fun and lighthearted—I mean, really, you don’t need a drink for EVERY life situation; sometimes what you need is to drink some herbal tea, call your mom, and go to bed at a reasonable hour—I didn’t want to leave you wondering what the hell hops actually are,  or what wine critics are talking about when they call Chardonnay “buttery.”
    So, I’ve included sidebars, along with a few longer essays, to help you navigate the often overwhelming world of wine and beer.
For each situation, I recommend a style of wine or beer, then one to three producers or brands that I consider good examples of that style. But here’s a little advice about those specific examples: Don’t get too hung up on them. Because the end of Prohibition left alcohol regulation up to the individual states, there is a huge  amount of variation when it comes to what’s available in each local market in this country. I recommend certain producers and brands that I love, but they may not be available where you are. We’ll get more indepth on buying wine and beer on page 6, but I actually don’t recommend spending a lot of time hunting down a specific name I mention and ordering it blind from some store you find on the Internet that happens to carry it. Find a store that sells beer and/or wine where you feel comfortable, and if you can’t find what I’ve recommended, ask if they can show you something similar. Say you’re looking for the Guy Larmandier Blanc de Blancs Champagne that I recommend on page 81. A good retail assistant, even if she’s never had that Champagne, will be able to pull the salient details from the name and description and find you a sparkler in a similar style. Who knows, it might be even better than what I recommended!
    There is so much wine and beer out there, I can’t even come close to tasting it all, and that’s part of the fun. I hope these pairings make you laugh, inspire you to try something new, and maybe take the sting out of that breakup.

A quirky, hilarious, and most of all useful guide to wine and beer.

Diane McMartin’s book is hilarious, quirky, and most of all useful. She covers the basics about wine-tasting, making something that is often daunting and overwhelming into something accessible and approachable. Her recommendations are sensible for just about any occasion, and she provides a fair amount of detail about types of grapes and wines for those interested in delving deeper into certain topics. This book is great both for yourself as well as a gift for your friend or family member who loves to partake in wine and/or beer.

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. It isn't simply a bout pairing wine and beer with different foods; rather it is about pairing wine and beer with different situations and feelings that practically everyone can relate to. The author, Diane McMartin, is very funny and witty, and she speaks her mind honestly on the subjects presented. She can come across as being crude and abrasive, but overall she is not derogatory or offensive. The author is obviously knowledgeable on the subject, and she has a way of putting "fancy" terms and phrases into simpler words that anyone can understand.

The first part of the book, called "The Basics", can be very helpful to beginners and novices alike. It helps you navigate tasting and buying wine and beer, and provides a quick, yet comprehensive, primer on reading wine labels from different regions and varieties. There is also a great section about glassware, containers, and tools of the trade. Another interesting section deals with the cultural taboo of screwcaps vs. corks.

The rest of the book goes into detail regarding pairing wine and beer with various life situations, emotions, and achievements. Some examples include having kids, dating, heartbreak, girl's nights, getting older, holidays, entertainment, weddings, and work. Throughout the book there are different informative sections to help increase your knowledge of wine and beer, including fun recipes to try at home, wine through the decades, boxed wine, yeast and hops, shandies, hangovers, aging, vintage, drinking and dieting, and drinking and dining. There are also humorous illustrations that fit the context in the book. The "Know Your Grapes" sections profile different grapes by region, flavors, perfect pairings, and examples to try. Likewise, the "Know Your Styles" sections profile different styles of beer and wine. At the end of the book there is a very helpful glossary of terms used in the beer and wine world, and a list of online resources you might find helpful.

Overall this book is hilarious and fun to read, but still very informative and serious about teaching you all you need to know about pairing wine and beer with different situations and emotions. I would recommend this book to all beer and wine enthusiasts, although the book deals more with wine than beer. There are better books on the market that are dedicated to the world of beer specifically if that is what you are looking for. I received this as a free ARC from Workman Publishing Company on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Charming and informative

I am as guilty as anyone else of shopping at the major chain store for my booze, choosing the second-least expensive wine on the menu, and buying based on whether I know the name or like the picture on the label. But I also love cleverly written books and I love learning things-this book delivers on both counts. Clearly written by someone who enjoys a good drink and also enjoys learning and teaching about wine, it presents information in an accessible, personable manner, as if the author is your friend who just happens to know a lot about the perfect drink for most situations.

She puts great little sidebars about wine regions and styles of wine that make you feel like you too could "get it" and order/buy wine knowledgeably. She also talks about beer and mixed drinks-it's very well-rounded. I am going to reread the sidebars next time I head out to a fancy dinner so I can make a smarter drink decision.

About the Author
Dr. Alan Gillen is a biologist and zoologist with a doctorate in science education. He is an experienced biology instructor at both the high school and college levels. He has authored more than 25 papers and two books in biology, microbiology, zoology, anatomy and physiology, and medical issues. He has been active in bringing a biblical perspective in biology and medicine in the classroom and local churches for the last eight years. He is also a regular contributor to Creation Matters, a CRS newsletter. He is active in bringing a biblical perspective to biology and medicine in the classroom. Dr. Gillen is currently working on a college-level biology textbook with Dr. Chris Carmichael and Frank Sherwin. Dr. Gillen presently is a professor of biology at Liberty University.

Interesting book

This is a very interesting book for those who have a scientific leaning. Another example of Gods creation and the curse which he placed on the earth after sin. Of course we all eagerly await the times to come when the lion shall lie down with the lamb.

Good book with some minor flaws

I purchased this for my daughter to use as part of her homeschool high school biology course. She likes it all right, but not as much as I had hoped since she wants to be a nurse and microbiology is necessary for that. I love the fact that it's a non-evolutionary, high school level science book, and my daughter says it's fairly easy to understand, unlike some other "homeschooling" texts that you need a scientist to interpret!

However, there are a few minor flaws I should mention. First, we can't use the tests at the back of the book because often the test for one chapter will ask a question not answered until another chapter. Also, my daughter says the author kind of beats the reader over the head with the fact that he's approaching the topic from a Christian perspective -- can't we just have a Christian perspective without constantly talking about it? Lastly, the author makes at least one derogatory comment about the Catholic faith. Is it really necessary for one Christian group to disparage another? I thought the "enemy" was atheistic evolutionary thought, not other Christian denominations!

Although I have a few pet peeves about this book as mentioned above, over all I would buy it again because it seems well-written, high school level science, fairly easy to understand without an instructor, and from a Christian perspective. The cons are mostly minor and easy to overlook. I recommend this book.

Excellent supplement to high school biology, or a microbiology text

When I first saw The Genesis of Germs by Alan L. Gillen, I knew I wanted to read it. This is totally my kind of book. Microbiology, from a creationist. Does it get better than this? (Okay, most of you are tuning out now... Yes, I am a geek.)

When I got the book, I was even more excited. Gillen does exactly what I've tried (and failed) to do with science for my kids. He pulls in biographies of some of the greats in the field of microbiology, shows how all these little critters could have fit into God's original plan, and shows how they behave in a fallen world. All in an engaging, conversational tone that rarely gets too academic. Yet it is packed with information, and would make an awesome microbiology text.

I have been trying to beef up my kids' junior high and high school science courses, turning them into honors courses. One way is by adding some additional reading. This book is now officially on that list. Or, for my oldest, I may use it as a spine for a Microbiology course, as he has already completed a year of biology.

Let's take a chapter and talk about what the book is really like. Chapter 6 is about viruses. And it is fascinating. The chapter is broken down into bunches of little sections, most only a few paragraphs long. So you can read just a little bit at a time very easily. There are a number of charts, illustrations, and black and white photos.

The chapter goes through a lot of information on the characteristics of viruses. It traces the history of virology. It goes through a lot of detail on various types of viruses. And it talks about genetic changes in viruses.

Profiled in this chapter is Walter Reed (the person, not the hospital) and his work in conquering Yellow Fever. The bios are probably my favorite part. Or maybe it is just the topic. Or the in-depth discussions of various diseases. Or...

I will be looking for other books by Gillen, such as Body by Design.

Cute little book

I just bought this book for my 16 month old little girl and she already has had me read it to her over and over and over again. She loves the way that the book has the pulls that reveal other pictures! It is a great brief bible book for those "little ones" who are just learning about bible stories!

About the Author

Chris Pye has been carving professionally for over 20 years. He started carving for a house-sign company, being paid per letter. Hundreds of signs later he had perfected an efficient and precise way of lettering, which he shares here. Chris writes regularly for Woodcarving magazine, and has written other books on carving. In addition to teaching woodcarving for all abilities, his is ordained into the Western Buddhist Order. He lives in Herefordshire, England with his family.

A beginners course

This is a very good beginners book... I just started wood carving and my technique wasn't very good. After following the tips and tricks that you learn from reading this well laid out book the letter's I am carving are much stronger and the shapes more fluid. I highly recommend this book.

Another excellent book from Chris Pye, all you need to know to start letter carving.

Written in Pye's usual thorough and detailed style, it helps you with selecting tools, how to hold your workpiece, shows different letter styles, both incised and raised lettering etc...

Buy the video if you buy the book

The book is excellent. I recommend it highly and use it daily, but the material came to life when I obtained the letter carving video (a lesson with Rob Cosman) as a companion piece. Seeing Chris explain, demonstrate and teach/correct,critique the theories and techniques to Rob in real time rather than reading about them provided a much better road-map to success than did the book alone.

For example, carving straight lines with straight chisels requires little explanation, but mastering the techniques for serifs, junctions,and arcs (both inside and outside curves) is much more complex. I've probably replayed certain sections of the tape 6-8 times, and although I should have it memorized by now still pick up something new each time. During the video Chris refers to the book as the in-depth authority of his methods and teachings, but acknowledges that "seeing is believing" insofar as the video is concerned.

About the Author

A sharp & witty portrait of the foibles of academics.

As a sociologist who teaches just the sort of research of which Lurie writes, of course I've always cherished this book, & I've followed its publishing history (it was originally furnished with a tacky, misrepresenting sci-fi cover, was O.P. for a while, & blessedly has been reissued). I also cherish the way it represents Lurie's many virtues: fine, tight writing; delicious word-play; witty imagery; & sharp observations of everyday life that remind readers of the social selves they may be forced to don--& how those social selves are at odds with their desires as individuals.
I've also used the book when I teach fieldwork sociology, the very discipline that Lurie's professors try to practice. Students are always fascinated by Lurie's sharp lesson in what not to do.

spirituality, group delusion and the perils of research

"Imaginary Friends" deals with spirituality, group delusion and the strange flowers of thought blooming in isolated conditions. It takes the old myth of the 'hidden people' and impresses it on a small, benign cult not dissimilar to Heaven's Gate set in an ordinary neighbourhood in an ordinary little town.

Two sociologists join the cult to research small-group phenomena and are increasingly drawn into the interactions and rituals of the cult as events escalate. The Coming is prophesied and tensions rise, culminating in the breakdown of the main researcher and and a lull in the cult's proceedings. Yet, the story continues....

The novel raises valid observations on conducting research and the blurring of lines between observer and participant; the characters are eminently believable, which made this an enjoyable read.

One of my Lurie favorites

To me, this is a great look at how people fool themselves...the people who want to believe in aliens, and also the people who fool themselves into thinking they can get involved with a group and not interact with it.

With Lurie's sharp eye for character and fine ear for dialogue, it is easy for a reader to get pulled in and immerse themselves in the world she creates. Based on a sociology study of groups who held the same beliefs as the fictional group she creates, I feel Lurie goes beyond the dry academic studies to illuminate what really goes on when people find their most mundane beliefs challenged by the surities of a larger group...such as society at large.

An emerald slab inscribed with the esoteric wisdom of Hermes Trismegistus that may be more than 2000 years old has inspired alchemists throughout history in their quest to understand the relationship between humans and the universe. Hauck, who has written about mystical experiences (Haunted Places), explores the tablet's message, drawing primarily on the work of classical scholars such as the Persian alchemist Zoroaster, the 16th-century physician Paracelsus, Pharaoh Akhenaten and the pre-Christian alchemist Maria Prophetissa to illuminate his substantial review of the history and principles of alchemy. In the Hermetic tradition, the physical and metaphysical worlds are mirror images: the transformation of a base metal into gold corresponds to the evolution of an ego-dominated person into one who possesses a permanent state of enlightened consciousness. Hauck's elucidation of the laws governing the refinement of energy, such as the Doctrine of Correspondence, the Seven Steps to Transformation and the Octave of Creation, will strike a chord with students of modern esoteric traditions such as the Fourth Way and Theosophy. His explanations of alchemical principles are difficult to understand, however, and will require scrutiny on the part of readers new to the material. There is no phenomenon of Western culture more surprising and perennially fascinating than that of alchemyAthe endless search of learned fanatics for the secret of making gold, or wisdom, or both. Hauck, a practicing alchemist, is the latest in a line of re-inventors of the old tradition, and his reflections on the inner meaning of calcination, coagulation, and other alchemical processes is both idiosyncratic and fascinating. Highly recommended for larger libraries, or where books on occult traditions are popular.

Good introduction for beginners

This book serves as a plain language introduction to alchemical symbolism and concepts. It includes an English translation and line-by-line explication of the Emerald Tablet. It also devotes a complete chapter to each of the seven operations of alchemy and includes several black and white illustrations from traditional treatises on alchemy. Unfortunately, the author spends a little too much time attempting to demonstrate his personal alchemical achievements, with results that can be downright silly ("Those who know do not speak; those who speak do not know" -Lao Tzu). The suggested exercises are unhelpful (for greater benefit, I would recommend taking up a discipline like yoga), the inclusion of celebrity star signs (not to mention a subchapter called "The calcination of William Shatner") undermines the credibility of the whole, and the absence of a strong editor shows up in several avoidable errors (using the word "courtesan" for "courtier", referring to Antonin Artaud as a 19th-century figure, etc.). Still, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a basic guide to alchemical processes and symbolism.

Good Start

The book is most suitable for people who are new to alchemy because it is written in a very simple language. In this book Dennis takes the verses from the Emerald Tablet, as a pattern for seven stages of alchemical transformation, and applies it to different areas of human development. He provides numerous examples which are intended to facilitate the understanding of each stage of alchemical transformation, but in my opinion, some of these examples don't quite make it.

The book will nevertheless be very helpful to a beginner to get an idea about the seven stages of alchemical transformation - to actually know them, one will have to experience them - and the later stages of alchemical transformation seem to be beyond the scope of this book - at least I have that impression based on the examples provided.

Finally a transparent alchemy book

If you've tried to understand the alchemical and Hermetic
traditions from primary sources, or translations thereof,
you have probably been as frustrated as I was. Those sources
are not written to be read by the uninitiated or even the
semi-initiated. Hauck has tied the tradition together from
its earliest origins and made it understandable. I looked for
my copy of _The Emerald Tablet_ to be able to cite details for
this review, but it's making the rounds of my circle of friends
right now. I may just have to buy another.
