Great book for people who are just starting on the topic

I got this book for my 16 year old daughter who was interested in the topic. She read it in about two days because she read it non-stop. It was a challenging read but fruitful. She loved it. What she liked about it was that was organized really well and it gave a background on every topic. Also at the end of each chapter was a section on recommendations based on current knowledge, which was directly helpful for understanding what to do. It repeated things a lot to ensure the reader understood the points of view, which was also great. Recommended for anyone wishing to get into this topic and looking for a great first book to read.

I loved this book! It's well organized and breaks down complex concepts so that they're both interesting and very informative. It does help to have a little medical knowledge or you'll have to look things up as you go, but overall the book is very accessible and the information is easy to understand. Highly recommended.

Captivating

This was my first encounter with Lucretius, and I was reminded a bit of my first encounter with Euripides. That is to say, while both are clearly products of their time, there is also something distinctly "modern" about their works that make one easily forget they're reading works thousands (!) of years old. As I read De Rerum Natura, three distinct elements stood out to me--the poetry, the science, and the philosophy of the work--and so I will discuss each separately in order to better organize my thoughts in order to review this book.

First off, the poetry. While it is strange to the modern reader to read a book on science and philosophy in hexameter verse, the adjustment is made quickly and there is something compelling, rhythmic, and concise about this approach. Much of this is due to Lucretius himself obviously, but much credit also goes to Humphries for his elegant yet accessible translation. Even though the translation is now 40-odd years old, it has not shown its age in the way that some older translations tend to.

Then there is the atomistic science--"materialistic" in the literal sense, not the way the term is used colloquially--which at times is striking for its similarities with modern science, but more often striking for its departures. While the modern reader will have to slog through a number of assertions that seem a bit absurd when viewed with 2000 years of hindsight, the scientific foundation of "the way things are" is indispensable for the philosophical argumentation of the way things ARE. If you are like me, you might start to ask whether the inaccuracies contained in this "foundation" weaken the philosophical structures built upon it ... but personally, the only support needed to make the grander arguments work was the general materialistic argumentation, not the specific scientific "facts" themselves.

As much as I enjoy the poetic turns of phrase and the scientific musings, it is the philosophy at the heart of De Rerum Natura that makes this an unforgettable work, even now. The grace with which Lucretius built his own arguments and the way he reduced his philosophical rivals' arguments to absurdity is simply masterful. For me, the pinnacle of this work are the last 250 or so lines of Book III when Lucretius addresses the issue of death, having just argued for the materialistic nature of the body and soul. These are lines sure to "burn and bother" the reader, alternately inspiring fear and comfort of a type completely different from that found in religious doctrine. Materialistic, yet not nihilistic ... Lucretius will reward the reader who invests the time to dive into this fascinating and oddly captivating work.

A Visionary Epic Poem...

Blending science, psychology, and philosophy into an epic poem, Lucretius (ca. 99 BCE- ca. 55 BCE) explores the science of atoms, what we now call physics; hints at the principles of "natural selection"; and promotes the enlightened view of reason over superstition. Some of Lucretius claims are patently absurd to our modern ears, still much of his sounder thoughts paved the way for modern science and philosophy. Clearly he was a visionary, a man ahead of his time. Ovid, Cicero, Montaigne, and more recently, George Santayana, praised Lucretius, and yet not suprisingly, for centuries the Catholic Church denounced Lucretius as an enemy of religion and did their best to suppress his work. This incredible poem which seeks to understand our very beginnings in the cosmic universe builds a bridge between Lucretius' ancient world and our modern scientific civilization.

Humphries uses clear modern English that meets the challenges of Lucretius' poetry. His translation was nominated for the National Book Award in 1969.

Just a caveat for the Latin student...

This is a fine prose translation for those who wish to read Lucretius' poetry in English and learn about his philosophy. It is not, however, a very useful tool for the Latin student looking to make sense of Lucretius' language, which can be quite difficult at times. Humphries' translation is NOT very literal or faithful to the original Latin; in fact, there are many times when matching the English and Latin texts together is surprisingly difficult.
I would suggest this translation for those who aren't reading the poem in Latin, but for students of the language, look elsewhere - this translation will not be very helpful.

I am really bothered by frequent typos in textbooks. With all the work put into collecting the information, is it too hard to edit the text once more? If there is a One True Medical Microbiology Book, this isn't it.

Here's an example of academic laziness in this book. On p. 128, the book mentions that for budding viruses, virus-infected cells will have virus-derived glycoproteins on their surface, making them immune targets. Then it says that cytotoxic T cells recognize these antigens. Of course, T cells don't have B cell receptors and cannot recognize surface epitopes directly. It should have said that affected cells can become coated with antibody, becoming targets for ADCC, which is performed by NK cells.

Great book, but they left out a lot

Don't throw away your Fourth Edition! The Fifth Edition has a lot to recommend it: much better artwork, more sensible organization of basic theory and microbe-specific detail, up-to-date pathophysiology and therapies, etc. In the Preface the editors state that much material has been "trimmed" to keep this edition the same size as the previous one. "Trimmed" is a euphemism for "dummied-down". They should have opted for a bigger book. First, they left out all the references; not a single one is to be found. This was a valuable feature of the Fourth Edition, and pointed to much relevant material for further study. A cryptic excuse for this is that the emphasis is on the "text narrative", not reference material. That's nonsense; all good medical textbooks have references.

There has been a turnaround of authors in this multi-authored book. The new guys seem to have ignored several changes in the taxonomy of bacteria and viruses, such as the designation of Flavivirus as a Family and the split of Papovavirus into Papillomavirus and Polyomavirus. The new tables still contain the old errors, such as asserting that Hepatitis B is a Family when in fact it belongs to the Hepadnaviridae Family. There are numerous little errors like this that have been carried over from the Fourth Edition; apparently, the new authors cut-and-pasted what looked good without examining it for accuracy.

The stuff that was "trimmed" was not "older and less important information", as stated in the Preface. The editors apparently have figured out that USMLE-obsessed students are more interested in answering test questions than understanding anything, so a lot of viral and bacterial anatomy has been cut. We can now view these entities as more of a black box than something with important innards.

Some of the ambiguous or unclear explanations of the Fourth Edition have been carried over to the Fifth, such as the description of the One Step Growth Experiment, which would be unintelligible were it not for Wikipedia.

I cannot find an errata page for any Lange textbook. This is a Good Thing, since we can now rest assured that there are never any errors in their books. Too bad there isn't a contact form for sending suggestions for improvement for the next edition; this is a really good book, but apparently they don't need the likes of you and me to make it even better. Don't bother sending suggestions to Customer Service; it will be filed away by someone unfamiliar with the word "enzyme".

The Preface references a web site which purportedly contains an "online learning center" with lots of extra stuff, like "additional cases, questions, and study aids". As of this writing, it is vaporware, and I've complained to the publisher. In fact, Lange doesn't even have a reference to this (Fifth) edition up yet. Maybe all this will be in place by the time you read this.

If you don't have the Fourth Edition, you can probably get it very cheap, and I suggest you do so (in addition to buying the Fifth Edition) for the references and the enhanced technical detail.

Good book

As a first year medical student I've really enjoyed this book. I think it's tough to make an all inclusive book on microbiology but Sherris does a pretty good job. I think it's got the right balance of clinical and micro information for a med student. I love the little summary lines they put in the margins- it helps you pick out the most important stuff and skim through stuff you already know or don't need to know. Very readable- not too dense, not to superficial. I was a microbiology major in college and had a lot of books that went into much more depth on stuff like molecular biology and had very little clinical information and so, again, for medical students and board prep, I think this has the right combination of material.

Great Book - The Kindle version appears not to be as complete as the hard copy

I purchased the Kindle version. The book is a great study guide that follows the class. I would give the book 5 stars - however - the Kindle version of the book is not complete. For example, there are study guides that are accessible via a web site. To access the guides, you need to refer to the back of the book for a code. The Kindle version does not have this (or I could not locate it). I have sent one of the authors an email to see if I could access the guide but have not heard back.

Descent Study Guide

I found this to be a good study guide, in combination with other resources. The book was much too short and light on some topics to be your only source for the exam. Practical experience and a firm knowledge of all topics, especially encryption and the TCP, IP, and UDP protocols are a must.

Good book as a supplemental study guide

This book was ok. It should not be used as the Primary study guide for the exam. I used the All-In-One CEH study guide by Matt Walker which I felt did a much better job explaining in detail the topics. The Official review guide however did go into a few areas that the Walker's book omitted, which is ok because the version I took didn't cover them anyway. Overall, the book is ok but I would only use this as a supplementary study guide to another form of studying.

Practical, timely and well written

Synopsis:

Financial guru Dave Ramsey and his daughter, Rachel Cruze, team up to teach parents how to “raise money smart kids in a debt-filled world.” Starting with how to teach your children to work, and continuing through what your child should do with their hard earned money (spend, save, give), Dave and Rachel talk about the principles of good money management for children as well as giving the reader plenty of stories of what life was like for the Ramsey kids. The second half of the book dives into more advanced issues such as how to be debt free for life, including how to go to college debt free.

My Thoughts:

I’m a huge Dave Ramsey fan and I’ve read a lot of his books, but this is his first book written with his daughter, Rachel. As usual, Dave presents a no nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is guide to raising money-smart kids. However, the addition of his daughter as an author changes the feel of the book. She offers story after story of what life was like growing up as “Dave Ramsey’s daughter.” The stories she adds give the book humor and somewhat soften Dave’s usual writing style.

Reading a book with two authors can sometimes feel disjointed. Not so with this book. Dave and Rachel identify themselves before each section that they write. They also use two different fonts in the book (one for Dave and one for Rachel) to help the reader remember who is writing at that point. It’s a nice touch that helps make the book feel more connected.

The information presented in Smart Money, Smart Kids is the same information that Dave Ramsey has been preaching for years, but it’s tailored to apply to children. Not only do we get stories of how these principles were applied to Dave’s own children growing up (which are the best parts of the book, in my opinion), but we find out specifically how to implement them in our own families. After talking about each concept in the book, Dave and Rachel break it down by age group and tell us how to apply that concept to our own children. For instance, in the chapter on saving, we’re told that kids younger than 6 need to see their money so it should be kept in a clear container. Six to thirteen year olds need to set small savings goals such as saving for a toy. And children ages 14-18, need to learn how to save for something big, such as a car or college. What you end up with is a very practical guide for how to train your children to handle money at every age.

This is a very well written book. The information presented in it is practical, timely and opposite of what the rest of the world may teach your children about money. And best of all, it’s fun to read. I highly recommend Smart Money, Smart Kids for parents of children ages 18 and younger. Your children will thank you one day for reading this book.

The Greatest Gift You Can Give Your Child

Even though I took high school English many years ago, I still remember our teacher requiring us to memorize many quotes from the books we were required to read. One I still remember was by Virgil, “As the twig is bent, the tree inclines.” I suspect that the first time I read the quote I did not fully appreciate the meaning. It is readily apparent that if a twig is bent in a certain direction, the tree will grow that way. What I failed to see was that the philosopher Virgil was not really talking about trees but about people. The behavior and lessons children are taught early in life, will have a significant impact on their adult lives.

Unfortunately, most people are doing a rather poor job of teaching their children smart money habits. Dave Ramsey and his daughter Rachel Cruze, the authors of Smart Money, Smart Kids have written a very comprehensive guide to help parents teach children smart money habits.

Dave Ramsey is a financial expert, NY Times best selling author and host of the nationally-syndicated Dave Ramsey Show. In the book, Mr. Ramsey shares his path to becoming a financial expert. He actually learned the hard way – by doing a lot of things wrong, going bankrupt and then struggling to get his life back on track. After bankruptcy, one thing that was not on his list was to re-establish credit. He was keenly aware of what got him into financial trouble and equally well aware of how to avoid trouble in the future. He made a commitment to live debt free.

Rachel Cruze had the good fortune to be born right around the time he was emerging from his financial troubles. She got the benefit of being raised according to her fathers newly discovered financial principles. As a child, she was not “given” an allowance. She was allowed to earn money by working, doing chores. She learned the connection between working and money. She was taught how to save and the proper ways to spend money. Part of the smart money education was setting aside a portion of all she earned for giving to others.

There are some extremely good examples of teaching/modeling smart money financial lessons beginning at ages 3-5 and all the way through college. By teaching them while they are young, before they have become a slave to the credit card trap, Mr. Ramsey’s children have started life with no debt – including no student loan debt. This is a very enviable way to start life. Rachel and her father show step by step how it is done. The lessons are simple and straightforward, but they do require discipline.

Mr. Ramsey and Rachel have a strong religious faith that is woven throughout the book. It is not necessary that your share their faith in order to gain the enormous benefits offered throughout the book.

I think most parents have a strong desire to provide a great life for their children. There is probably no better gift you can give your child/children than to teach them about the debt trap. This book is a real how to guide to give your children that gift.

excellent book, great purchase

This book is excellent! My husband and I are the first generation in either of our families to give much thought to money as far as budgeting, planning, thinking towards the future etc, and I was a little at a loss as to how to help my kids figure it out much sooner than the rest of us did. This book was really helpful towards that, and it was done in a non judgmental, kind, encouraging manner.

Obviously we all have our strengths, and obviously Dave Ramsey's strengths were helping is kids succeed with money from a young age. His kids were earning money for their first cars before they were 10! My reality looks different than theirs, and I had to remind myself that what worked for them, isn't going to be what works for my family, but taking some of their ideas and basic principles, I can also help my kids achieve great things with their money. Quite frankly, step one is simply being aware of the value of money. What should it be used for, things you want, or things you need etc. Natural consequences, and letting your kids fail at the little decisions now are important (ie: Rachel recounts a story where she spent all of her money on one little game outside the amusement park they were at, and then had to watch her brother and sister have fun with their money inside while she was miserable and her parents wouldn't relent and give her more).

I really liked though too how they encourage you to give your kids grace. Rachel recounts how one mom was proud of herself that she didn't help her son out when he went to buy the xbox he had saved up for and didn't have enough to cover tax. Rachel was incredulous and told the mom that if her 10 year old son had managed to save up nearly $400 to buy an xbox the mom should have gladly covered the tax! You want to encourage your kids, help them feel like they have succeeded, not be so caught up in semantics that you miss the opportunity to help them feel like they accomplished their money saving goal.

This book was really encouraging to me, and helpful on my parenting journey. I would recommend it to anyone looking for ways to help kids understand money, and give them a foundation for succeeding later. Five stars for sure.

About the Author
Scott Coplan, PMP,  is a project manager, educator, author, and speaker on project management best practices. He is the founder and president of COPLAN AND COMPANY, a project management software and services firm.  Scott managed EHR requirements definition and acquisition for a national specialty healthcare firm's multiple facilities and oversaw implementing over nine financial, administrative and clinical applications at three separate Los Angeles County, California hospitals in both in-patient and ambulatory settings.  He also holds faculty positions at the University of Washington Schools of Public Health and Medicine, where he teaches healthcare project management. 
David Masuda, M.D., is a physician and educator at the University of Washington. During the past 10 years, he developed and delivered courses in clinical care and applied clinical informatics for certificate, masters, and doctoral programs in health administration, medicine, and nursing.  He currently develops distance-learning approaches for healthcare higher education.

Must read for Healthcare CIOs

In their book, Project Management for Healthcare Information Technology, Coplan and Masuda have proposed that the successful implementation of projects in health care require the synthesis of three methodologies: project management, information technology management (product management) and change management. The first two methodologies are codified in the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK). The third methodology does not have a formalized document outlining the process for introducing and implementing change in an organization; rather, it relies on theories and practices from the disciplines of organizational behavior and organizational development. They reason that the complexity of the health care environment and the importance of "buy in" of all of the parties to the implementation of new technology in the health care setting require that projects draw on all three methodologies.
The structure of this book enhances the message that the authors are communicating. Each chapter begins with a clear statement of the learning objectives. These objectives are then discussed in a logical order and build upon each other. The narrative is enhanced by multiple quotes from six project leaders in world renown health care organizations describing their understanding of the concepts presented in the text. Finally, each chapter ends with a conclusion summarizing the concepts from the chapter and providing endnotes with further information on the topics covered. The chapters cover each methodology in detail. Thus, making it possible to skip areas that the reader feels that they have fully mastered and permitting them to focus on the methodologies that they need to understand in further depth. The Appendix is a graphic model of the fully integrated methodology for health information project management. It illustrates how each of the three disciplines fit into the five basic process groups in a project: initiating, planning, executing, controlling and closing. This is a fitting conclusion to this comprehensive work on project management for health care information technology.

Yes - This Is It

I like the "this is it" review and agree 100%. I have now used the books approach on several projects with success. PMBOK does not address the Change Management piece and this is where the fail/succeed of projects falls. It is also one of a handful of books that I now have both the Kindle and print edition. The overall framework also works well in non-HIT and merger integration - as in any framework/methodology, tailoring to the project is essential, and this book has it covered.

"People side" of Project Management

Great to have the "People side" elevated to equal status with project management and IT management in the real "triple constraint" of healthcare IT. By addressing the communications required to change human behavior, Coplan and Masuda have not only moved Change Management to the forefront of the healthcare IT discussion, they also provide a methodology for Change Management that incorporates the "Knowledge Areas by Process Group" structure familiar to all project managers.

A MUST READ for anyone struggling to effectively address the "people side" of their projects or wanting to AVOID these pitfalls by effectively incorporating a Change Management Plan into their healthcare IT project.

About the Author
Melvin Williams is the Director of Human Performance Laboratory at Old Dominion University, and has more than 30 years of lab research with a focus on the role of nutrition in sports. He has written and edited five books on ergogenic aids and the role of nutrition in sports -- his two latest books are The Ergogenics Edge: Pushing the Limits of Sports Performance (Human Kinetics) and Nutrition for Health, Fitness, and Sports, Sixth Edition (McGraw-Hill). He earned a B.S. from East Stroudsburg State College (1962), a Master of Education degree from Ohio University (1963), and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland (1968), with a doctoral dissertation on the effects of alcohol as a possible means to enhance strength and endurance. He's an accomplished marathon runner, placing first in his age group numerous times in the Marine Corps Marathon, which merited his selection in the Marine Corps Marathon Hall of Fame in 2001.

You can take this book to the bank!

If your seeking to get into the concert promotion business who should you learn from, someone who has been there and done it or someone who's a good writer.

Hal Davidson is the real deal, he's an active Festival Consultant and Promoter working in the business. He promoted Stompin 76 still remembered as the Woodstock of Bluegrass back in 1976 and he was 21 years old at the time. He has without a doubt the best book on Concert Promotion out there take my word for it. So if you're in the concert business get this book.

Well the book arrived with the CDR of some XLS and WRD docs.
It's a great read, written with passion. It's almost a confession at times.
Hal know this business and he shares his experince in ways that a layman can understand.
The "book" is clearly self published, it's actually a brick of A4 with a binder pobably made at home by the man himself.
Respect that!
Although there are overlaps the book is specifically written for the N.American market.

However I bought several books and this by far was the best.

I cannot believe all the information packed into this book! Now I am ready to take on the world of concert promoting. The forms and CD are a great bonus! The author gives us EVERYTHING we need to know to take on the art of organizing a profitable and enjoyable event. I love that he has the experience and knowledge, and that he is willing to share it with us. You will not be sorry investing in this manual. This is "THE" building block to success.
