Say Something. Feel Something. Do Something. The Top Ten Things That Are Great About FAITHFUL.

How did this book find me? I was there, hiding out in the section with thrillers, suspense, serial killers, crazed stalkers... and then I chose this lovely book. And for a while it made cynical me a bit less cynical.

Shelby and Helene are high school best friends. They wear matching bracelets. They do everything together. So when beautiful Helene is dumped by her boyfriend and wants to throw rocks through his window, Shelby reluctantly goes along and drives through the winter night. She hits a patch of ice and skids. Instead of turning into the skid (remember that from driver's ed?) she hits the brake. The car spins and collides. Shelby thinks she has died, but she suffers minor physical injuries. Helene is in a coma.

Helene is eventually moved to her home, and is thought to be the bestower of miracles, a sleeping beauty in Long Island. People line up to spend a moment in her presence, to hold her hand and perhaps be cured.

Shelby, meanwhile, is institutionalized. She stops speaking. She cuts herself. She shaves her head. She feels guilty for every bad thing that happens to others. She is convinced she causes bad things. She feels guilty and responsible for what happened to Helene.

Then one day she receives a mysterious postcard. It has a drawing and a simple message. "Say something."

Thus begins Shelby's slow climb back to life.

What makes it a great book. Well, since you asked...

10. Even in my deep cynicism, I believe that miracles happen. Alice Hoffman apparently believes this, too.

9. If I had to start on motherhood all over again, I would want to be exactly like Shelby's mother, who stands by her daughter through the deepest tragedies. She doesn't judge. She supports and finds beauty where others might see none. She is strong when she needs to be strong and gentle when she needs to be gentle.

8. One of the best portrayals of teenage angst, shown through Shelby's friend's daughter and understood by Shelby, who has clearly completed the AP Teenage Angst course.

Magical Journey

If you are an Alice Hoffman fan, I'm sure you'll buy this book no matter what the reviews because you know her work. Her latest tale of redemption does not disappoint. Through a story of tragedy and sorrow, she weaves a journey that's so personal you'll come to love the main character. Shelby and Helene were best friends until one night that changed it all. What happens to the survivor is a life clouded in guilt. Shelby lives in her basement shrouded in memories and bitterness. When she finally emerges, the journey is long and mostly painful. Shelby learns about forgiveness of self and acceptance of others. Hoffman develops each character carefully and in detail. She also infuses that touch of magic for which she is famous. Dreamy and flowing, this book is a must read.

A long slow uphill climb

This is not an easy feel good light hearted read. It's a testament to how one seemingly innocent decision can lead to a life filled with regret, guilt and self punishment. I have to confess that midway through I wanted to put it down and walk away because as much as I was rooting for Shelby to let herself feel some level of happiness I was getting tired of the doom and gloom on page after page. I actually did put the book away for a couple of weeks to give myself a break from it and then when I picked it back up I found I couldn't put it down because I just couldn't let go of wanting her to get some sort of a happy ending or at least a glimpse of what a happy life could feel like. I won't spoil the ending for you but I will say reading this book is a long slow uphill climb but in the end it's worth it.

Amazing Rollercoaster Ride

I first read it on Reddit, and it just captured my attention to the point where I forgot my surroundings and it was as if I had become part of the strory itself. I was unable to turn away, I needed to know more and once I did.... it was as if the whole world just shattered.
There is a quote "That moment when you finish a book, look around, and realize that everyone is just carrying on with their lives as though you didn't just experience emotional trauma at the hands of a paperback." That is ecactly how I felt when I read this, it's such amazing story telling.

Beautifully Haunting!

When I first read this on Reddit, I was completely blown away and very creeped out by this short-story online series. And now that it has turned into a novel, I can't wait to read it over and over again. Dathan, you are a very talented writer and we are all so happy that you really did turn this into a novel.

This is definitely a must read for all, just be prepared to have nightmares afterwards ;)

Works better online.

I read this story originally on reddit's section for "creepypasta", or scary stories written (usually anonymously) by internet users and posted publicly to read. It had first been published in parts corresponding to the chapters laid out in this book. When the author announced that he would be selling a hard copy of the story with additional material, I was ecstatic. In its original form, Penpal was one of the most unique and exciting horror stories I had read to date, accounting for both "amateur" and "professional" work. I was really impressed honestly and was thrilled to have a chance to keep the story in my permanent collection.

However, Auerbach's expanded edition may succeed in building upon the original work in word count, but his often rambling and incidental additions to the text actually diminishes the story overall. I found myself dragging through the work during sections that had originally captivated my attention online, and while I appreciated the honesty of the narrator's voice, Auerbach's writing skills are simply not strong enough to hold up under the pressure of sustaining the reader's attention during prolonged periods of relative inactivity for the main character.

The underlying plot is incredibly strong, the tension building and suspense is strong (but, I hate to say it again, much stronger in the original text) but the writing is actually fairly average. I actually found that the additions to the text showcased Auerbach's iffy writing ability and drew the reader's attention away from his strong points -- the aforementioned plotting ability and ability to shock and sustain the reader's interest. A sparser writing style really helped him and made him seem like a much stronger writer than he may actually be. I can see an incredible career for him in short story writing (a skill that very few people have), but perhaps prolonged narrative text is something to work on for the time being before seriously attempting to market it again.

The end result is still a better horror tale than most people seem to be producing these days, and his originality should be celebrated, really. The story itself is strong, intriguing and horrifying. As the pieces come together bit by bit, and the reader begins to put the story together, the story elicits genuine terror and surprise. I have not been affected by a story like that in a long time, and I'd love to see where time and some practice leaves this writer.

excellent, but for kindle it needs hyperlinked index

I reference this book frequently when I'm on chest, and the main thing i would request is a hyperlinked index (where the page numbers are selectable next to the term you are searching for). Neuro requisites has this and it is incredibly useful. Also, under the 'go to' menu inside the kindle app, an option to go directly to the index should be added.

thank you amazon for giving my shoulders a break and for slowly chipping away at my need to carry anything but my ipad.

I have only read to page 1042 so I do not yet know how it ends, but regardless, Pensky has rendered a limpid translation of Habermas's "Volkswagen Quantum Official Factory Repair Manual: 1982-1988, Gasoline and Turbo Diesel, Including Wagon and Syncro." This is one of those translations that appears to speak more profoundly than the original, and with the expanded appendix, the full color map, and the inclusion of new chapters on both "Wagons and Syncros" this text will spend more time on my nightstand than on the shelf.

While Prof. Habermas is one of the most versatile thinkers of the late twentieith century, one had no idea that his expertise went as far as Volkswagen repair.

Architecture with Purpose

What an inspired, clear, and exciting guide to improving our design/construction processes. I am a third through the book but can't see myself beginning a new project without implementing what I have learned so far. Therefore, we have planned our first Goal Setting Workshop for a new project near the end of this month, and I am tasked with serving as a process facilitator and presenter of the Integrative Design Process/Systems Thinking Concept. I see great power in the many stories and pictures in your book.

Seeking to "redesign the design process," as they put it, the authors of this remarkable book share their unquenchable spirit of inquiry. At the core of the book is an expanded and updated presentation of their method of integrative design--"integrative" because the integration is ongoing, never completed as would be implied by the more common term "integrated design."

In that sense, this book is like a reference guide to the "Whole Systems Integrated Process Guide (WSIP) 2007 for Sustainable Buildings & Communities," an ANSI/MTS standard (see EBN September 2007). But wrapped around that step-by-step, nuts-and-bolts guidance are the big ideas that inform this integrative process. Understanding that buildings, their components, and their context are nested whole systems, the way to solve interconnected problems without creating new ones is to "solve for pattern." This is done by discovering the story of each place, and designing not merely to restore ecological functions but to facilitate the ongoing evolution of a place to higher and better functioning.

Ultimately, the focus of resources, energy, and attention that comes about when designing and building or renovating a facility becomes an opportunity to transform both the place and the participants, helping both initiate a continuing evolution. If this all sounds like pie-in-the-sky idealism, read a few of the many real-world stories to see the potential.

The real thing - much needed - practical

Change is hard and let's face it, while LEED was / is an excellent tool or primer on green design it will never get us to truly impacting climate change. Designers must let go of the old implementation model with LEED tacked on. We must encourage creative and whole system thinking within our entire stakeholder team. This book is great for managers, in that in lays out a profitable implementation process. Its also great for soul. Should you take it to heart you will enjoy a better working and community environment. Just maybe we can regain our spiritual connection to earth as well.

Should be required university reading for all architecture and engineering practice management classes.

In the fall of 1982, celebrated photographer of the British music scene Janette Beckman moved to New York City, where she found Hip Hop on the edge of explosion. After a decade underground, the DJs, MCs, b-boys, fly girls, and graff writers were finally getting their due from the downtown crowd. While trains were covered in graffiti and boomboxes were blasting on the corners, DJs were up in the clubs while the dancers rocked the floor. Artists were getting signed and local legends were born. And while others called hip hop a fad, Beckman knew better.

Her photographs transport us back to a time before music videos, marketing departments, and über-stylists took control. The queen of the 80s album cover, Beckman shot the icons of the era: Afrika Bambaataa, GrandMaster Flash and the Furious Five, the Fearless Four, the World Famous Supreme Team, Lovebug Starski, Salt-n-Pepa, Run-DMC, Stetsasonic, UTFO, Roxanne Shante, Sweet T, Jazzy Joyce, Slick Rick, Boogie Down Productions, Eric B. and Rakim, EPMD, NWA, Ice-T, 2 Live Crew, Tone Loc, Gang Starr, Ultramagnetic MCs, Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock, Special Ed, Leaders of the New School, Jungle Brothers, Beastie Boys, Rick Rubin, and countless others. About the Author
Londoner Janette Beckman began her career at the dawn of punk rock, working for The Face and Melody Maker. Her portraits celebrating the music and attitude of bands like The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Jam, The Specials, The Police, The Ramones, and the punk, mod, skinhead, 2-tone, and rockabilly culture in the UK are collected in Made in the UK: The Music of Attitude 1977–1983 (powerHouse Books, 2005). Beckman’s work has appeared in Esquire, Rolling Stone, and Glamour, to name a few. She lives and works in New York.

Def Jam Recordings mogul Bill Adler has worked alongside hip hop staples Kurtis Blow, Run-DMC, Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde, the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, and others, and is the author of Tougher than Leather: The Rise of Run-DMC (Consafos Press, 2002) and a contributor to the pioneering Hip Hop photography book by Janette Beckman Rap: Portraits and Lyrics of a Generation of Black Rockers (St. Martin’s Press, 1991). Adler is the cofounder of NuYo Records, the founding owner of Eyejammie, a fine arts gallery devoted to hip hop, and a well-renowned archivist.

Throughout the 1980s, Tom Terrell, a.k.a. Tom T., was Washington, D.C.’s most influential club (Nightclub 9:30, Fifth Column) and radio (WHFS-FM) DJ. Since 1996, TT’s features and reviews for Vibe, Trace, Essence, Global Rhythm, and NPR’s All Things Considered have inspired music lovers at home and abroad. His pop culture essays have also been published in The Vibe History of Hip Hop (Three Rivers Press, 1999), Men of Color: Fashion, History, Fundamentals (Plexus, 1999) and Transculturalism: How the World Is Coming Together (powerHouse Books, 2004). Tom Terrell is currently working on his photo-journal memoir, Bitches, Blips & Bops: 40 Years Lost in Music.

interesting erotic fantasy

Gillian Nordstram has agreed to become a pleasure giving submissive Disciple. She leaves behind her lover Bruce Wolff to receive training at Nemi in the art of sexual submission.

Sethlucius visits Bruce and offers him the job of a lifetime involving his Gilliam. Bruce initially assumes that Gillian's fantasies have entered his mind, but agrees anyway. As she fears but submits to winged beasts, he follows her with plans to be her only dominant.

This is an interesting erotic fantasy that star two intriguing lead human characters and a horde of paranormals. The sex scenes run the gamut and are very vivid while Gillian and Bruce are fully developed especially his initial self pity and her fears. However, the plot never fully seems developed so that this alternate reality never comes across except in the BDSM scenes. Still fans who relish something way different in their erotica will appreciate the sexcapades of Gillian and Bruce in another realm.

Gillian has consented to be a Disciple of Pleasure. Taken to Nemi, trained to be a sexual submissive, she thought she left her former life behind. But when she meets a former beau in this alternative reality, Gillian realizes that this man is the one whom she truly desires.

This highly erotic, Roquelare-type story includes f/f and very frequent, graphic, often bizarre BDSM scenes. It's difficult to discern if Ms. Howard created an alternate reality or simply another planet. Creatures, including angels and djinn, have been configured into the novel but with so little development it almost begs the question of their existence.

The hero is drunk and self-pitying in chapter one when he thought he lost Gillian, making him highly unlikable. Perhaps it's just as well that the author doesn't see fit to mention him for another forty-five pages. It also seems rather unrealistic that the heroine, albeit afraid of the winged beasts she encounters, is not terrified enough to avoid having sex with one when given the opportunity. If you seek a story full of inventive sex, this might be your thing. If you're looking for a well-developed story beyond frequent sex, you might want to give this one a pass.

Usually paranormal, vampire fantasy driven stories are not my cup of tea. That said, I liked this one. The main characters were quite human and in familiar quandaries. And who among us would not like 'divine' intervention in complicated human romances. Perhaps the ones in this book are a little elaborate and at times hard to follow, but they work.
