Redemption, after all the trauma and sacrifice, I expected a different ending. Redemption suggested salvation, I felt like I had been taken for a ride and dropped off in nowhere land

I will say I loved the series until the end of the last book....

Really?
You just kill 2 main characters off like that.

They didn't even have their souls after they died..

I have never read a book that disappointed like this one has. All that Alexis went through in all the series and she jst doesn't even get a happily ever after...

THIS HAS SPOILERS!

The main part of the book was great just as the ones before it, but I am so disapointed. Alexa and Kayden die in the end and someone else owns their souls. I kinda get why they had to die, but all I can think of is that they are stuck in hell with out their souls. The ending really bothered me because of this and it makes me feel bad. I will admit that I like stories to end happier and Im a sucker for love, but I can find comfort in a sad ending when it's done right. This one was done poorly.

A must buy book

I bought this book nearly 40 years ago and loved it! So much that I wanted to read it again 20 years later and could not find it. I thought about it again a month or so ago and went on an internet search for it, not sure if it was still in print. Philip Jose Farmer was one of the best sci-fi authors of his time and his books are still worth reading today. This book starts out with an older man looking to buy a house with his cranky wife. A portal opens up in the basement to another world and his adventure begins. Minus the cranky wife who does not have a clue where he went to. From there the story picks up. I am not going to give it away for you. the review in Amazon gives you an outline of the story. You should BUY this book. If you like sci-fi you will like this.

Another fun and fantastic journey by Farmer. Probably not as creative and suspenseful as the "Day World" series, but I did enjoy it more than "The Other Log of Phileas Fogg". If you like any of Farmers other material, than you will enjoy this one. Pick it up.

The World of Tiers series is an outstanding bit of work that I have read again and again over the years. It is up there with the Roger Zelazny AMBER books in the pantheon on seminal fantasy works. You will not be disappointed by this series of books about cruel and insane makers of worlds jealously competing against their godlike kin. Highly recommended.

No longer a good value -- let your institution buy it

This book unfortunately suffers from bad timing, excessive brevity and bad pricing. After looking it over closely for an evening, I decided to return it.

The book was published about two weeks before the 2011 March 11 earthquake and tsunami, so obviously it is silent about that event. The bigger timing problem, though, is that it was published midway through the Democratic Party of Japan's fleeting hold on power, when no one could foresee the party's implosion before the end of the following year. As a result, too many contributors credit the 1994 election reforms with bringing 2-party rule and alternations of power into Japanese politics, overestimating (as we know now) both the Liberal Democratic Party's failures and the DPJ's durability.

The book might nonetheless have been useful as a sort of compilation of information about Japanese politics between 1945 and 2009 (and BTW, this book is *only* about postwar politics), but for the fact that the contributions are rather short, typically 10-12 pages. Although the selection of topics is good, and some of the articles provide interesting perspectives (such as an article about hierarchies of citizenship in Japan), their brevity makes it difficult for many of them to survey the relevant literature. As a result, this is more like a conventional edited volume of articles emphasizing their respective authors' points of view, rather than a "handbook" providing a bird's-eye view of a topic. Even as to the facts it does present, it doesn't always succeed in serving its advertised function as reference material. E.g., an article about money and politics compares campaign costs for LDP and DPJ candidates in various elections, but only up to 2005. Another article downplays the practical importance of improperly apportioned election districts as giving the LDP only a small advantage, but lacks a table or chart that might have provided more quantitative support for this proposition. I couldn't find any discussion of the algorithm used for proportional representation (d'Hondt), much less of the reasons for its adoption and retention in Japan. The Supreme Court of Japan merits less than a page of discussion. There is a unified bibliography at the back of the book, making it difficult to see what sources a particular author relies on or ignores.

Still, if the price had been closer to $40 or so (not exactly cheap), I might have kept it for the facts and figures it does contain and its several interesting bits of more robust analysis. But the price is prohibitive. While neither Oxford nor Elgar publish any direct competitor to this book, their handbooks are typically between 2x-3x as long (with Elgar's being especially text-dense), at a comparable or lower price. Simply put, today this is nowhere near a US$200/JPY20,000 value, especially if it's coming out of your own pocket or research expense allowance. For that price, you could buy several monographs, or more focused edited volumes, about the topics that interest you most. I hope the publisher will recognize that the book is already dated, and issue a paperback edition in the lowish two figures (USD), or perhaps reduce the e-book price to the low end of that ballpark. Until then, read your library's copy, or rely on other sources.

Finally! Overlord is available in a licensed English publication!!!

Compared to some other reviewers, the packaging of my copy of this book was quite adequate to protect it and it arrived in perfect condition with a nicely illustrated dust cover. The ONLY possible complaint that I might have is that while the text pages are nicely bound to a cloth backing, the book's boards are merely covered in paper. I would have been more than willing to pay a bit more for cloth covered boards, but for only fifteen bucks, this was still acceptable.
Now, as to the story itself, I first encountered this story with SkytheWood's online translations and fell in love with the story about a leader of monsters in a virtual reality game finding himself in an alternate reality after the shutdown of the game's servers. The pacing of the story is perfect and the main character's continuing dilemma of finding himself thinking more like an evil skeletal Overlord as opposed to his former kinder self as a human is both touching and hilarious at different times. I particularly enjoyed his trying to come up with a suitably "evil" reason for doing the "good" deed of saving a nearby village as this definitely appealed to my admittedly warped and twisted sense of humor.
So I, for one, am extremely happy that this wonderful story by Maruyama Kugane is finally available in a licensed English publication and I will eagerly await each new volume that gets released in English so that I can properly support the author that up to now, I have been enjoying for free online. I only hope that the author and Yen Press will see the online translations as the FREE advertising that they were meant to be since SkytheWood dropped this series as a project as soon as the news of this series being licensed came out.

Buy and support the author of this great series!

The novel is great but this is a review for the physical copy. I had bought this in order to support the author whose work I've already read online. Skythewood stopped his translations whose work was being brought over to America.

So I finally had the chance to support the author and purchase my own physical copy. I'm also looking forward to buying the books up to if they were to be translated volume 09 where the current series is at and volume 10 is supposedly to be released this year in 2016 in Japan.

I bought the HC version and it comes with plenty of art designed by Soo Bin. The font is very easy to read. The translations looks good from my pov and spell Ainz name with a "z" instead of a "s" like the anime did. My only problem is that there is some spacing issues in the text throughout the novel, which might've been some formatting problem.

It's great as far as plot

The book came today but I read it last year. It's great as far as plot. Book 1 is the foundation of everything to come so it's not especially thrilling. It's rather short compared to most American novels but that's due to national differences in their standards. Treat this book as an introduction into the morally ambiguous dark fantasy of Overlord.

The book itself is fairly decent quality. It's not some collectors edition Tolkien hardcover, but it's definitely up to standard. The illustrations are great. I'm planning on buying all of the hardcover volumes as they come out. No complaints.

As for amazon's shipping I was slightly disappointed. My copy didn't have any damage but it probably should have. The book was just tossed into a small box with a small amount of rough brown paper to keep it safe. When I was opening it the book was sliding all over the place. Maybe that's a testament to the durability of the book?

Exactly what I was looking for..

As an EMT who has (sadly) seemed to forget several years worth of Spanish courses - and now finding myself dealing with a great deal of the Spanish-speaking public - this is exactly what was needed!

This quick reference guide DOES have some conjugation errors (please refer to Chris' review below for specifics), but overall it has (most of) the specific phrases I need to be able to communicate the facts (& in many cases, time is critical!). This makes it essential to have with me on the day-to-day.

What was unclear (before I looked at Chris' photos) is whether or not it was the same spiral-bound, with plastic coated pages, pocket version I have seen in stores ..and it is - that makes it the perfect size to either slide in a pocket or put in one of the small pockets of my jump bag. Great product, arrived in the exact time frame expected. Thanks!

Really Helpful for all levels

I would like to start by saying that I am fluent in Spanish, and I find that it helps to supplement those phrases or words that don't come to mind. It is really small so it fits in your pocket! Would definitely recommend to new speakers and fluent speakers as well.

Love it! Espectacular.

Great story and great teaching. full of vocabulary and rhymes. It is a great translation, probably one of the best out there.
This book is my sons favorite. We even had it as a birthday party theme.

Great vocabulary builder, fun animal sounds and great rhyming story!

This Spanish translation of The Little Blue Truck has exceeded my expectations. While The Little Blue Truck by itself is a great story and has cool illustrations, the translated version went above and beyond to make sure it remained engaging, entertaining and most importantly FUN for the little ones. I love how the translator made sure the book would still rhyme and be fun when read out loud, and while this did not allow a literally translation of the actual wording, in some of the phrases to make sure it rhymed, the story is still accurate in terms that it reflects what is being seen in the illustrations. My son loves it and of course all the animal sounds and the beeping horn make it for a great story-time book. If you are trying to find FUN translated books, look no further, this one got it right. I will be checking out the sequel (also translated) shortly and look forward to more work from this translator.

Finally a Spanish book that has a nice story with a teaching and more important the story rhymes. This is key to keep your children's attention. If anyone knows of other Spanish book with a story that rhymes please let me know!

About the Author

Christian de Virgilio, MD is the Director of the General Surgery Residency Program at UCLA-Harbor Medical Center, and Co-Director of the 3rd Year UCLA Medical Student Surgery Clerkship. He has been awarded the UCLA Golden Apple Teacher of the Year Award from the UCLA School of Medicine nine times, and the National Golden Apple Teaching Award from the American Medical Student Association.

Top tier resource for the surgery rotation and the surgery shelf.

Surgery was my first clerkship of the year. After hearing about how hard the shelf exam can be (and that most of it is Medicine), I felt that the famed Pestana book wouldn't be enough. A friend mentioned this book, and I also found it referenced a few times on Student Doctor Network. I took the plunge.

Very thankful I made that decision. This book contains the answer to almost every (reasonable) question you'll get pimped on during the clerkship and served as a phenomenal tool for preparation for the shelf. It's a hefty book, so you'll need to start early, but it's worth it. I would try to read about a chapter a night (some days I would skip and make up for on the weekend). Don't necessarily go in order. I would highly suggest reading chapters relevant to the cases you have the next day...you'll look like a rockstar most of the time.

By the end of the rotation, I read the book cover-to-cover once (doing all the questions in the back as well). The questions are hard, but get you into the mindset required for the shelf. A few days before the shelf, I read Pestana cover-to-cover for the first time and did all of the questions in that book as well. It should only take you about a day. Most of Pestana is contained in this book, so it'll be a review. The day before the shelf exam, I reviewed the 'summary of essentials' page at the end of every chapter in this book. Somewhere along the way, I did about 90 of the UWorld Surgery questions. Didn't even finish them. I also did both NBME practice exams, which I would suggest. They don't offer answers, which is unfortunate, but you get to see the style of questions on the shelf...which can be helpful. You'll be less surprised when you get curveballs on the real thing.

I did not use NMS Casebook or any other books because I just didn't like them or they seemed to have tons of crazy tables and figures.

Ended with a raw score of 83, which at this time of year translated to the 95th percentile...which I was thrilled with. I'm not any smarter than a typical medical student, so this is a testament to the resources used. Could you go higher with some additional resources? Yeah. No doubt. But, this book was well-written and easy to read (for a textbook). I never felt like I was being thrown unnecessary details...it was all stuff I felt like I genuinely wanted to know as a future physician.

15 hours plus this book = HONOR the surgical clerkship

If you want to go into a competitive residency (or highly desired location) then you have to honor surgery. It is just a fact. This book makes that possible for ANY medical student - even if you are in the middle of the class like myself. The chapters are incredibly easy to read, very well explained, and packed with high yield information. Everything discussed is something a medical student will very likely be asked to answer at some point (on a test or in person). Don't let the size fool you. Each chapter should take no more than 15 minutes to read; there is a lot of blank space (not sure why the authors did that?). 59 chapters x 15 minutes is 885 ... divided by 60 .. is 15 hours. 15 solid hours with this book and there is no way you won't demolish the shelf exam and clerkship. The questions and explanations in the back of the book are also outstanding and more like the real shelf questions than UWorld or any other question set I used. This book was the only one I used for my surgery rotation and will likely reference it on my surgical sub-I's next year.

Hands down the best text I've read in medical school. Extremely clear and focussed; very relevant to both the wards and the shelf exam. Would estimate it took me 30-40 hrs to read (more than another reviewed here estimated), but absolutely worth it. For the next edition, I would propose to the authors that the publisher should condense the text into a smaller physical form factor, since there is significant blank space on each page and the book was a bit heavy to carry around. All around just an incredible piece of work though.
