Wanna do ortho? GET THIS BOOK. Way, way better than Netter...

This is such a fantastic book as an introduction to the concepts of achieving good exposure in orthopedic surgery!

Of particular note to medical students about to start buying books for this fall's away rotations: I didn't, and I wouldn't, really fool much with Netter's Concise Orthopaedic Anatomy, 2e (Netter Basic Science), since the level of detail just doesn't compare. If you're gonna read about an exposure, you may as well do it right and read about it in Hoppenfeld. Throw down the coin, since--after all--you'd expect that you'll be needing this book for a few years to come anyway! Look at it as an investment in the Match! Read on for reasons why...

I write this as an about-to-start intern who used this book extensively on my third- and fourth-year orthopedics rotations during medical school, so it is mostly medical students who will find this review useful. This book almost definitely was over my head in large parts during my third year but started to click early in my fourth-year rotations after I had spent a good bit of time in the OR. I see residents referring to this book often, even the seniors sometimes, for a great broad overview of the "large menu of options" to "get to the bone and stay there", especially for fractures. Discussion of the rationale for particular approaches is somewhat limited (and is probably a discussion more suited to books written about particular injuries that would spark such a debate), but the "how-to" and the lending of understanding of the anatomy while in a particular approach is spectacular.

The artwork is truly great and gives a good sense of three-dimensional anatomy, via "overlaying" layers of tissue overtop the dissection plane of interest. This is definitely contributory towards relating surface anatomy and palpable landmarks to where you'll be on deeper planes, as well as "just how far away that posterior interosseous nerve is that you don't exactly wanna go looking for." The setup of the chapters is highly consistent, organized, intuitive, and excellent for the thought processes in starting a case and gaining exposure, starting with an overview in each chapter briefly comparing and contrasting the utility of each of the discussed approaches, and within each section starting with the incision, going through the internervous planes, superficial and deep dissection planes, and ending with "what to avoid". The pictures tend to be far more helpful and superior than what is usually in Rockwood and Green's much more prose-based descriptions of exposures specifically relevant to a particular fracture, and I would very highly recommend this book as a supplement to that, for understanding sake, as well as for "looking good in the OR" sake.

Many sections are included on "applied surgical anatomy" (a great place for third- and fourth-year medical students to start, reviewing the "just ortho-pertinent gross anatomy topics", if you will, and in a way that is highly applicable to the approaches).

Chapters are manageable length, and the pictures give a great conceptual basis for what you'll see in the OR. Very possible and also absolutely critical to read these chapters the night before a case (and Handbook of Fractures or, if there's time, Rockwood and Green), before getting pimped by trauma attendings. Knowing as much as possible of the contents of Hoppenfeld made an excellent impression on my rotations. Pretty reasonable to "get surprised" in the AM by the post-call admitting resident presenting an operative fracture/patient you didn't know about last night, and "hurry up and read about this exposure real quick before the case starts" on my iPad, too, which was a bonus.

Regarding pictures, indeed, intraoperative photos are notably absent from this book (unlike C. Jordan's "Atlas of Orthopaedic Exposures", which is based exclusively on photographic images, albeit in cadavers which make things uncharacteristically easy to visualize). However, I refer much more often to Hoppenfeld than to Jordan's book, which I also own, since Jordan's book lacks some of the conceptual and functional explanations of the anatomy. Jordan's book, like Hoppenfeld, is written from a highly practical perspective, and I like that part of both of these books. Both contain an element of "how to stay out of trouble", which is all so critical in surgical fields. Another point of comparison is that Hoppenfeld's kindle edition is much more viewer-friendly than Jordan's book, which did not translate well at all from print to kindle edition. The Hoppenfeld kindle edition is overall better (albeit not perfect, since there is still some flipping back and forth from images to captions).

I have thumbed through older editions of Hoppenfeld that did not include full-color, and I think that this new edition is a full order of magnitude better. Indeed two-tone black-and-white in older editions may have been good conceptually, but it is nice to have something that registers better visually in your brain when you're just trying to memorize the images... Worth every penny for the new edition.

One caveat to note is that Hoppenfeld, while very broad in scope, is not 100% all-inclusive. Perhaps nor should it be... There are a couple of exposures in Jordan's book that aren't very well detailed in Hoppenfeld, but I'd say Hoppenfeld outnumbers Jordan in terms of the overall completeness. I would recommend looking at the table of contents via the kindle sample to get an idea of what all is included. Reading the first chapter via kindle is pretty representative of the rest of the book's content. Hoppenfeld also has a couple sections on hip and knee arthroscopy for very basic principles and where to put ports, which is very helpful for medical students and perhaps very junior residents. Importantly, this obviated the need for me to get an additional esoteric book on arthroscopy just to know what was going on anatomically on the monitor. Obviously, readers would do better with other books for more advanced arthroscopic anatomy later in residency(my sports experience is also limited, aside from thumbing through Stephen Burkhart's fantastic technical manuals shoulders--The Cowboy's Companion: A Trail Guide for the Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgeon and the newer Burkhart's View of the Shoulder: A Cowboy's Guide to Advanced Shoulder Arthroscopy) but Hoppenfeld was notably great for my foot & ankle rotations. Definitely a semi-dizzying array of different approaches in the foot and ankle depending on the structure of interest, and most are covered superbly.

I cannot compare this book to the Master series book on orthopedic exposures Master Techniques in Orthopaedic Surgery: Relevant Surgical Exposures, nor to Mark Miller's book on exposures Orthopaedic Surgical Approaches, 1e . Fellows would almost certainly be familiar with Hoppenfeld's atlas and would know the following information, but I'll state it: that more specialized topics as far as surgical exposure may be better covered in other books, namely in hand surgery with Schmidt's Surgical Anatomy of the Hand, Doyle's 2002 book (http://www.amazon.com/Surgical-Anatomy-Hand-Upper-Extremity/dp/0397517254/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=2BRCVY7BFOBCH&coliid=I3MF5P2VUYPH7B), and the classic from 1984 Kaplan's Functional and Surgical Anatomy of the Hand. I am less familiar with these books, since I spent very minimal time during my rotations doing hand surgery.

As a bottom line, if you want to do well both for your understanding and looking good during medical school rotations, as well as get a book you'll refer back to again and again prepping for the early years in the OR, get this book. It is worth every penny, and I have it both in hard copy for making drawings on pictures as well as on kindle for quick reference at the hospital. Get this book, and get Handbook of Fractures. Two absolutely fundamental bodies of knowledge with which to be familiar as a burgeoning almost-orthopod.

Best in Class!

Certainly iconic, probably legendary! I used the first edition extensively during medical school and residency. Now, recently updating my library, I got the updated 4th edition -- still top shelf, even better than its predecessors!!

This is by far (as most of the reviewers would concur) the quintessential work for learning operative exposure for surgery of the extremities and spine. For all orthopaedic, plastic surgery and neurosurgery residents, don't even think of starting without a copy! For medical students interested in any of these specialties, save some money, get a loan -- get Hoppenfeld! An absolutely amazing investment -- reads very easily as well!

Phenomenal for med students

This is a terrific resource for me as a med student. As I have been told by many others ahead of me, this is an essential resource. I have the text book, too, but the Kindle version is a blessing, as I can always have it with me. I always use this to review approaches the night before, the morning of, and in between, cases. It has been worth it's weight in gold to me.

About the Author
Dr. Andranovich received his BA from the University of Virginia's College at Wise and then went to George Mason University for his MA.  After working for Prospect Industries (a commercial roofing and waterproofing company) in northern Virginia, he attended the University of California, Riverside, where he received his PhD in political science.  He worked for the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) and COSMOS Corp. in Washington, DC, and has taught at several universities, most recently Washington State University, before coming to CSULA in 1993.  He has served as his Department's Chairperson, and as the Faculty Director of the Students Learning in Communities program at CSULA. He teaches and advises students in the public administration program. He believes that learning is best accomplished through a variety of approaches and typically uses a combination of lecture, discussion, portfolios, and group assignments in his courses.  He regularly teaches American government, urban politics, and public policy courses.  His research interests are in urban and regional policy making, and comparative public administration.

Good coffee-table reading

As promised by the title, this book provides lots of information about the technology that goes into Formula 1 cars. The writing is easy to read, the photographs and sketches are well-chosen, of good quality and easy to follow. Even the constant struggle between politics, technical evolution and the need to keep the playing field level finds its place in the book.

Now that the Super Aguri F1 team has gone, if you are wondering just why the sport is so expensive, you'll find the answer here-supported by some impressive statistics.

The only downside to this book is that the author has used copious amounts of interview material verbatim. If you've seen how F1 mechanics, bosses and drivers talk during an interview, you know there is very little real meat in their words. Unfortunately this makes the book sound like an extended press-release at times.

Beware of some fairly technical passages-you will need to have some knowledge of how cars work in order to understand them.

a comprehensive guide for anyone trying to enter the world of F1 cars. Principles and main ideas behind design concepts and hi quality close ups on a variety of cars.The book provides insight on basic principles regarding aerodynamics, suspension system, brakes and engine without going into depth. If you are interested for an introduction its worth every penny spent, if you've allready read other technical manuals regarding F1 cars you may want to look for something more sophisticated.

About the Author

Marcelo Marcio Soares - Professor Marcelo Soares is currently Professor at the Department of Design and the Department of Industrial Engineering at the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil. He is also invited lecturer at the University of Central Florida, USA, Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal and the University of Guadalaraja, Mexico. He holds an M.S. (1990) in Production Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was also awarded the Ph.D. at the Loughborough University, in England. Dr. Soares is Professional Certified Ergonomist from the Brazilian Ergonomics Association, which he was president for seven years. He has provided leadership in HFE in Latin American and in the world as member of the Executive Committee of the International Ergonomics Association. He was also appointed as the Chairman of IEA 2012 (the Triennial Congresses of the International Ergonomics Association) which was held in Brazil. His research, teaching and consulting activities focus on manufacturing ergonomics, usability, product design, information ergonomics and applications of Virtual Reality in products and systems. Professor Soares currently serves on the editorial board of Theoretical Issues in Ergonomics Science, Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing and several publications in Brazil. He has more than 180 papers published in congresses worldwide and several books and book chapters. He has undertaken research and consultancy work for several companies in Brazil. Prof. Soares is co-editor of the "Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics in Consumer Product Design: Methods and Techniques" and the "Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics in Consumer Product Design: Uses and applications".

Francisco Rebelo is currently Professor and Director of the Ergonomics Department at Lisbon University, Portugal. Is the head of the ErgoVR Unity of the Ergonomics Laboratory in the same University - http://ergovr.fmh.ulisboa.pt/ mainly involved in the modelling of Virtual Environments to study and optimize the human interaction in Ergonomic Design. Francisco Rebelo is European Professional Certified Ergonomist and belongs to the council member of the Centre for Registration of European Ergonomists since 2003. Violent entertainment is good for kids, and demonizing it can do great harm to their emotional development, claims Jones (Honey, I'm Home!) in this provocative and groundbreaking work. Drawing on his experience as a parent and as a creator of children's cartoons, as well as interviews with dozens of psychologists and educators, Jones forcefully argues that violent video games, movies, music and comics provide a safe fantasy world within which children learn to become familiar with and control the frightening emotions of anger, violence and sexuality. He debunks studies linking violent media with violence in society and argues that children clearly understand the difference between pretend and reality. Providing realistic and helpful advice, Jones says parents need to learn to differentiate between what violent games mean to children and what they mean to adults, and to stop imposing their understanding of them on children. Adults may be horrified at the literal meaning of a video game, but children are far more interested in its emotional meaning; "through identifying with a fantasy figure who displays intense sexuality, wields destructive power, and exudes heroism, kids can help themselves feel more control over these forces." Jones speaks to adult fears of the power of popular culture and cautions that "entertainment has its greatest influence when it's speaking to something that isn't otherwise being addressed in a child's life." To lessen the impact, adults should "model nonaggression, empathy, respect, a clear distinction between fantasy and reality, and the integration of aggression and other scary feelings."

Jones's thesis is straightforward: the violence in popular culture is to be embraced rather than feared. In his estimation, it provides a vehicle for objectifying the volatile emotions that young people already experience, presents an opportunity to learn control and to experience power in a culture that perpetuates the helplessness of children and adolescents, and affords a sense of community for those whose limited social skills often result in alienation and loneliness. Adult objections to popular culture violence, the author says, result from failing to recognize that the constructs are fantasy and not asking children about the appeal of action figures, comic books, video games, and rap music. Rather than provide a sequence of logical arguments, Jones uses the 13 chapters to repeat variations on his themes. Employing both anecdotes from his own experience and those of other professionals, and drawing upon existing scientific research, he debunks the "prevailing wisdom" that directly correlates the viewing of violence with violent behavior. Although not an academic, the author has done his homework. He presents his case convincingly, and the concluding notes provide support. Killing Monsters belongs on public library parent shelves and in collections that support teacher training, library science, and the communication arts.

Jones (Honey, I'm Home!: Sitcoms; Selling the American Dream) here thoughtfully explores the positive developmental aspects of fantasy and shows how it allows children to experiment with and explore various concepts and roles. As children grow, the vehicles chosen for fantasy play change, and the choices are always instructive: "Children want to be strong, secure, and happy. Their fantasies will tell us what they feel they need to attain that, if we pay attention." Jones dissects formal studies, is critical of the "loud, plastic trash marketed to [children]," and observes that "there is no joy sweeter and no satisfaction more unassailable than healthy aggression channeled toward a creative end." Based on interviews with psychologists and educators, on workshops he conducts, and on research, this book will show involved, attuned readers that fantasy in all its forms (including the more passive pursuits of TV, movies, video games, etc.) can be a tool to strengthen and comfort young people instead of just a threat to their sensibilities, as presumed in such shrill books as Dave Grossman and Gloria Degaetano's Stop Teaching Our Kids To Kill: A Call to Action Against TV, Movie and Video Game Violence. Great discovery

I recently stumbled across this book while shopping at a bookstore, and it came at a perfect time. I have a 3-and-a-half year old son that enjoys some shows that some people feel are not appropriate for young children. Shows like Power Rangers (his all-time favorite), Pokemon, and a few others.
My son goes to a Montessori School, and we have always been quite happy with him there. One day, the head of the school pulled my wife aside and said we have a problem with my son's behavior. She stated that he was showing "aggressive behavior" and that he was the ring leader of a handful of kids that had the same problem. Our first reaction was shock and a fear that we were bad parents. Coming from someone who deals with kids all the time, you feel they would know what's best. She said that the shows he was watching were causing the problem, and that we should not let him be involved in watching those shows. That's when I started thinking about it. I asked her the next time I saw her to define aggressive behavior. She said that my son and his friends would play fight and do karate on each other. I asked if he actually ever hit anyone, and she said no. I also asked if anyone was ever hurt or if they took the playing beyond just playing. She had no answer. I even asked if they took turns winning and she said yes, and that was part of the problem!
This is when I found Killing Monsters, and I am so glad I did. The things it talks about directly related to me and my relationship with my son. I love when he watches Power Rangers, and puts on every article of clothing he owns to enhance his powerful character. He walks through the house as though he could conquer anything! He also wants us to hug and kiss him during the Barney song, and that shows another soft and incredibly gentle side that my wife and I love. Play fighting and toy swords are my son's favorite, and to have to take that away from him seemed so unnecessary.
I loved this book and read it twice. I have also passed it on to friends with children that have loved it just as much. I am a young man, only 30 years old. There are a lot of parents like myself that were raised around video games and violent movies. Taking that away doesn't solve a problem. It's all about parental involvement and education. This book reinforced what I believe is the key to a healthy child.

This book changed my mind.

As a psychotherapist and medical school professor, I speak regularly with parents who worry about their kids' taste in entertainment. I have commiserated with them often. After all, weren't the Columbine shooters obsessed with "Doom" and similar fare? Don't images create possibilities? Gerard Jones argues against the prevailing belief that fantasy violence makes kids violent. Close study of the literature shows that teens who watch the most violent entertainment actually commit fewer serious crimes. And among the 18 boys who perpetrated school rampages in recent years, the majority showed no interest in games. Instead of asking the unanswerable: "How does violent entertainment affect kids?" Jones poses 2 more interesting questions: Why do they love what they love? and: What is the place of fantasy violence in a world that condemns it in reality? He uses his teaching experiences and 30 years of social science research to show how children use make believe to master fears and experiment with feeling strong. In "Girl Power" Jones contends that just as girls used to identify with male fantasy figures, boys are now identifying with Lara Croft and other super-heroines. In a culture in which the male imaginary has been standard--something to which girls and women needed to accomodate--this expanding set of possibilities for kids is no small triumph. While the book is targeted to parents, it's also a solid piece of scholarship, and the author is obviously as comfortable with Freud and Bettelheim as he is Batman and Mega Zords. A fine cultural critique informs his argument. ("We don't ask whether game shows predispose our children to greed or love songs to bad relationships." "Killing MOnsters" made me think of James Joyce's hearing the word "imagination" as "the magic nation" (in "Finnegan's Wake.") Gerard Jones reminds us that we're all permanent citizens of that vast and weird republic, sometimes for worse, but much more often for better.

A solution to a deadlocked discussion?

I first heard of this author on a radio interview. I was intrigued by what he said, but what truly struck me was the interviewer's comment afterward; he said, in effect, that all our previous efforts to deal with the power of media and violence in children's lives haven't worked but "maybe this guy has the answer." That caught my interest, because I see so many problem-solving efforts in modern America trapped in fruitless conflicts between two sides (liberal v. conservative, free speech v. watchdogs). Two sides more invested in continuing the conflict and placing blame than making any real change. Until someone steps up with a new solution that pulls together the strengths of both sides and moves the discussion forward.
My interest and hopes were very well borne out by the author's book. I don't like violent media, and I'm inclined even after "Killing Monsters" to believe that it has many negative influences on our society. What Gerard Jones makes clear, however, is that simply asserting its negative effects with increasing anger and fear does do good for anyone. Young people interpret attacks on their popular culture as attacks on them, and so they become only more defensively attached to what we criticize. Censorship is problematic because the young people most fascinated by something forbidden will be the very ones to find it anyway; and, as Jones shows well, if it is forbidden they will be unable to discuss it openly with adults but will identify with a subculture that makes that media its core. "Overidentify" is a word Jones uses several times to describe the conditions that lead to a negative reaction to media.
This, I believe, is what the host on my local radio station was referring to: if we are to change the way young people react to media (or "harness the power of media," as Jones also says) we must begin by understanding why they like what they do and what sorts of interpretations they give it. This is why this book particularly excites me: not so much that it argues that violent media is "good" but that it opens the door to reducing its negative effects. I don't know that even the author intended this as his book's primary message (indeed, I think he often errs by downplaying the reality of violence in contemporary American society), but for those of us who are concerned the culture of violence, that may be its most important argument. I believe this may indeed be the "answer" to a circular argument that has seemed for decades to make no difference to the harsh reality of our society or the content of popular culture.
The book's tone is thorough, measured, and persuasive. My sense is that it will be of greatest interest to those who are already inclined to think about these issues, whether from a personal or philosophical point of view. I, who have no children but am very concerned about the quality of contemporary culture, found it compelling. As did a friend with two young boys. Another friend, however, found it "a bit slow." Interestingly, he confessed that he agreed with nearly all of the book's points, and said he didn't feel the need of so many thorough arguments and examples to support them. Gerard Jones has created something intriguing here: a book that may be more interesting to those inclined to disagree with his initial thesis than those who agree. That, perhaps, is the mark of a truly thoughtful and thought-provoking work.

a classical book on the theme

The book starts with the principle in portfolio selection, risk and return, diversification and the classical theory. The main features of the financial institutions are introduced and the basic risk they confront in the trading and banking book. A brief history of the Basel regulation is given and how important volatility is for the risk management. The different forms of value at risk is introduced and how it is used in the different risk measurement. It is the main book on the theme and I think the practical action will take place in the application of the theory. No mater how long it is relevant. You can read it with the basic skills in maths and no long mathematical treatise are used. It is easy to understand.

So disappointed.

I am so disappointed. I went out and bought the recommended brand ingredients. First recipe was so runny it never set up so I pitched it. Confident I had done something wrong I went on to recipe two. Same thing. The ratio of liquid to dry ingredients is way out of porportion. To make these recipes will be a try and fail to figure out the correct measurements. Not sure it's worth the trouble. I'll just look for new recipes.

I've been enjoying this book, and have made a few of the recipes. Some of them I liked and some of them I didn't, pretty much like all recipe books. If you're interested in making your own protein bars, I think you'll find this a useful read.
