Nice to know, but this is one economist who won't change your life

It was a good effort but the author tried to make J R McCullogh seem like a very important part of classical economics and McCullogh's impact simply doesn't show. Technically the book is written well in regards to it's economic focus and explanations, this author is a very good writer. I did find his style a bit strange in describing McCullogh's life in phases. Even though the book is written well for it's economics information, it failed to impress me that McCullogh had much of an impact on economics. He was "the first" professional economist and that is important but his actual contributions seemed to always slip into the wake of Adam Smith and David Ricardo, flipping between both of their "original thoughts". In summary, not a book that will add much to your economic knowledge but it's not a difficult read or does it take too much time to complete.

The 6th Edition Tries Hard, but Falls Flat

This book looks promising, but the authors seem to be writing about recent-past trends in curriculum as if they were the waves of the future. They seem to have a strong bias for unstructured classrooms and postmodernism, even though those ideas appear to have reached their peaks and begun to decline in the real world. They talk at several points on the uselessness of standardized testing, but the consensus these days is it is an abdication of responsibility to omit verification of results in the classroom.
The book also adds new sections on technology and here again I have my doubts that the authors really understand the topic. For example, in chapters one and six they write about the rise of the internet and it's effect on the classroom learning environment. Sound promising? I thought so and was sorely disappointed. They write about the internet as the vanguard of the unstructured classroom of the future, but provide little evidence to back it up. They write that it will usher in a future time when students will guide their own learning and, through self motivation, study the things they are supposed to study. They will do this because they are motivated to learn. Have the authors been near any children lately? It seems highly debatable that kids will find learning "cool" and pursue it on their own simply because they can do it at a keyboard. I suspect they'll do what they do now and pick games over information. Wiles and Bondi argue that children have never had the opportunity to study what they want to study when they want to study it; but there have been public libraries for centuries. One can learn whatever one wants there, and in any order. Little evidence of enthusiasm for them on the part of students has been seen thus far. In truth, kids rarely use the internet for learning. They use it for entertainment, and the authors don't seem to understand this. In fact, while arguing for unstructured learning, the authors state that the biggest problem with the internet is it's lack of structure! They are right about that one.
There is another problem in the book, and it is most disturbing. There seems to be a radical leftist bias in parts of the book. At one point they state that the internet will level the playing field in learning so much that the role of teacher will whither away and students will be in charge of their own learning. Eventually the schools themselves will whither away and unstructured learning will dominate in the future, producing an equal environment for all. They appear to be advocating this strongly throughout the book. This idea sounds distinctly Marxist, and I question strongly whether it belongs in teacher education in the United States of America.
The book does well where it sticks to the facts, but these facts are drowned in a sea of opinion and debatable conjecture. In my opinion there are better choices available in the field of curriculum development.

The authors of this long-running text are way out front in focusing on the Internet as curriculum's future. The entire first
chapter is dedicated to what a technological district might look like and how curriculum decisions will shape that future in schools. Further reading brings the reader face-to-face with
the complexities of such value decisions.
I use this text in my classes and find that students usually
select to keep it ater the class ends. What greater testimony to
this book's use as a desktop resource could be made?

The first chapters were devoted to ideas about reproduction and heredity as found in the works of the Greek and Roman writers of antiquity and of scientists and observers of the Middle Ages. The beginning of a new era in the 18th century was noted in the controversy concerning performation and epigenesis and especially in the botanical discoveries of the late 17th century and the 18th century (by Camerarius, Linnaeus, and Kölreuter). Some 40 pages (now expanded to 60) were devoted to the plant breeders and theorists of evolution in the 19th century, including Mendel, and were followed by an excellent chapter on the origin of variations and the mutation theory.... The last chapters, about a fifth of the text, were devoted to the great cytological discoveries of the 19th century, to Weismann and the germ plasm theory, to the rediscoveries of Mendel's laws, and to the first conceptions of a chromosome theory of heredity.

"The second edition is an improvement and expansion of the first. Forty pages have been added to the text, including a 12-page facsimile of Mendel's letter of 3 July 1870 to Carl von Naegeli (the holograph has not been published previously) and 115 titles added to the already extensive bibliography. Proper attention has now been paid to Karl Pearson's contributions (1900 to 1909), to the theory of Mendelian equilibrium, and to Fisher's critique of Mendel's theory....

"A valuable feature of the book is the brief biographical notices of most of the chief actors in the history of genetics up to and including the rediscoverers of 1900. Most of these notices are accompanied by portraits."

The present English translation is based on the second German edition, but it contains in turn a wealth of new material added by the author since the German publication.

Missippian Culture for the General Reader

The author has both excavated and written profusely on the Missippian Culture, centered in Cahokia to the East of Saint Louis, and the builders of the largest pyramids in North America. The culture flourished in the later Medieval times, just before the white men came to North America. Cahokia should be a famous as Chichen Itza and Tikal--this book is a superb introduction to the culture and to the scholarly discputes about its origins and acheivements.

Every well educated American should be familiar with Missippian culture. Read this book!

A history of the Mississippian people.

A very readable and comprehensive history of the endemic peoples of the Mississippi valley. Although Cahokia was the largest site structurally, pains are taken to present cultural development throughout the larger environment in the valley. From the early, less planned and less financed archaeology, through a broad look at these peoples, the text is fact-filled and efficient. This short, but well referenced and indexed book gives a thorough look at the Mississippi valley, from the initial building stages, to the tie in with the far-reaching 2,100 BC dry periods which helped bring about the downfall of Cahokia and endemic groups throughout the central and western areas of America. A must read.

Provacative and engaging account of Cahokia

Pauketat is a bit of a bomb thrower and he lobsquite a few well directed missiles in this work, but they all land to good effect and he gives a very good account of the fluorescence of the Mississippian culture at Cahokia. His argument holds together very well and his genuine passion for the subject keeps it quite engaging. My only real complaint is that the book basically ends with Cahokia, and does not really discuss the Mississippian in the Southeast at all, nor does it have much to say on Cahokia's precursors. I would love to see a volume on either subject that was as passionately, thoroughly, and engagingly written.

In a way this is almost a mirror of Kantner's work on the Anasazi, which is part of the same series, suffers from almost the reverse flaw Ancient Puebloan Southwest (Case Studies in Early Societies), barely discussing the Chacoan period, but illuminates what happened after the end of Chaco.

Highly recommended for those interested in the largest center in the Precolumbian US.
