Imperialism Past and Present, by Emanuele Saccarelli, Latha Varadarajan

After a long hiatus, when it was seemingly banished to the wilderness of esoteric academic debate, imperialism is back as one of the buzzwords of the day. In the past decade many have invoked it as an old specter only to nervously deny its contemporary applicability. A smaller, but highly significant minority has embraced it as a positive good - the only way out of the contemporary political impasse. Meanwhile, the term has continued to be applied to the most diverse range of economic, political, cultural and linguistic phenomena, as well as historical scope. From the Persian Empire of antiquity to contemporary American military operations in the Middle East; from China's ongoing economic penetration of Africa to the old Soviet domination of Eastern Europe, passing through every real or perceived form of "hierarchy" and "privilege", imperialism is now invoked with great frequency and even greater imprecision.

Imperialism Past and Present clarifies the prevailing confusion and provides a concise historical account of imperialism, explaining when and how it emerged and its relation to the colonialism and empires of the past. Should any sort of predatory foreign policy be regarded as imperialist? Does the seemingly universal concern for "humanitarianism" and human rights rule out the applicability of imperialism to contemporary politics? The book examines important theoretical debates about the origins and nature of imperialism, as well as the most significant and dramatic episodes in its actual history - from the 1884 Berlin Conference, through two World Wars, decolonization, and the end of the Cold War. As Emanuele Saccarelli and Latha Varadarajan argue in this provocative book, imperialism is hardly a political artifact. Rather it remains the mainspring of global instability and conflict today.

Review

"How did imperialism become such a decisive factor in modern history? This insightful book uses both history and economics to address that great question. Ranging from Joseph Conrad and Adam Smith to Rwanda and the Arab Spring, it sheds new light on a force that continues to shape the world." -Stephen Kinzer, author of The Brothers and All the Shaw's Men

"Imperialism Past and Present is essential reading for anyone interested in current events. A lucid book that returns a central category - imperialism - to our conversation about what otherwise appears to be random disasters in remote places." -Vijay Prashad, author of The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World

"This superbly written, researched and argued book enables us to understand contemporary international relations through the lens of historical continuities. All students and scholars of these issues will benefit from reading it." -Pádraig Carmody, author of The New Scramble for Africa

"A wonderfully frank, lucid and irreverent primer. Sweeping with historical command from Thucydides through King Leopold to Dien Bien Phu, it is uniquely powerful when demonstrating why recent U.S. and European adventures - the bombing of Serbia, the invasion of Libya, the Rwandan genocide - should be grouped with the classical imperialisms of old. Sharp, feisty, and, in spite of everything, filled with hope." -Timothy Brennan, author of Wars of Position: The Cultural Politics of Left and Right

"The concept of imperialism in international relations has fallen from academic fashion, but the practice of imperialism has continued uninterrupted. The post-2001 War on Terror has ushered in a whole new era of global interventions. Imperialism Past and Present does an excellent job of linking up present-day imperialism with earlier historical experiences, showing a broad continuity of imperial practices over long periods of time. This is a welcome addition to the international relations literature, bound to trigger much needed debate." -David Gibbs, author of First Do No Harm: Humanitarian Intervention and the Destruction of Yugoslavia

The Many Faces of Imperialism
By Michael Griswold
Imperialism Past and Present is an interesting book in that it attempts to outline why imperialism happened in the past and why it continues to happen in the present with the US invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. To clarify, the imperialism of the 1800 and 1900’s is not the same imperialism that we witness today (If one in fact views this era as imperialistic). While the late 1800’s to 1960 imperialism was more about getting economic resources for the colonizer, the modern day imperialism seems to be more rooted in cultural and ideological grounds under liberalism. But the basic point is still the same: larger companies dominate weaker ones.

While I thought that the discussions dealing with how imperialism has changed over time were very interesting, the definitional soup that the average reader has to wade through in order to get to these discussions can be enough to drive one up the wall. I am thinking particular of the imperialism vs. colonialism debate, which while helpful tends to leave one confused. In the effort to so clearly define the terms of the debate, the debate itself gets lost in the trees.

This is a very good effort to link two hundred years of imperialism together in a relatively brief number of pages, but the definitional soup really drags the book and the reader down.

Imperialism Past and Present presents a great historical, political and economic analysis of Imperialism
By John Mark Shorack
Imperialism Past and Present presents a great historical, political and economic analysis of Imperialism. At the beginning, it follows a political theory analysis presenting what Imperialism is not, and then analyses previous ways Imperialism has been studied, including works by John Hobson and Vladimir Lenin, to then present their analysis of Imperialism from an economic, political and international perspective.

The following chapters of the book guide the reader through a timeline of Imperialism beginning in 1885 with the Berlin Conference, onto the Treaty of Versailles, The Second World War, The Cold War, and finally the 'War on Terror', while presenting a succinct account of Imperialism through all of these events.

"Imperialism Past and Present" was very interesting to read, and definitely worth it!
It helped me put all current events, news and wars into a clear historical and global perspective. Know when I speak of imperialism, and imperialist countries, I will know what I am talking about!

Hmmm

Imperialism – like it or hate it, understand it or wonder what it really is – is brought under the watchful eye of the authors in this fairly specific book, which aims to mix history and international relations together and inform the curious, waiting reader.

It is just unfortunate that it failed to gain traction with this reviewer, since the subject is quite interesting on many levels. Imperialism as a term is being applied within many economic, political, cultural and linguistic subjects, yet quite a few people are confused about what it means and how we should view it or respond to it. This book aims to change that and provide a bit of authoritative knowledge infusion at the same time.

Unfortunately this is less likely to be a spontaneous “something different”-read for most. Even those who may find a benefit or a need to study it probably must to focus unnecessarily hard. It is by no means a bad book, yet it just felt a little bit too onerous, laboured and less inviting than it could have been. Fortunately the price is not too high; as an expensive book that you can possibly struggle to connect to might just lead to resentment and even less reader focus.

The central theme of the book is interesting and there are some insights there, so for many it could be worth the additional overhead to extract the knowledge. A general reader won’t get as much out of it; that may be a shame as with some remodelling it could have broader appeal without compromising on its content quality.

Otherwise, there is always a local library…
