EXCELLENT!

Very well written... It transports you to a way of life and a culture unknown to the average American.
When you read Reyna's descriptions of where she grew up, and the conditions, it is perfectly understood why so many human beings want to go to 'El otro lado' where everything is perceived as a bed of roses...
With hard work, commitment, and tenacity anyone can achieve the 'American Dream', as Reyna has...
I am an immigrant from Latin America, who came to this country to teach and was never exposed to the conditions Reyna grew up in; however I share the same values in regard to family and commitment to family . My reasons for coming to the USA were completely different and was never undocumented...
I could not put the book down (well, my iPad with the Kindle App) after I started reading it!
If you want to know more why we have so many undocumented people in the US... Reading through this book will will give you the answer.

This book changed everything: the way I see my mother and her struggles, the way being left along can affect a young person, and overall the aspect of overcoming a struggle. Reyna Grande is extremely vivd and gives specific detail as to her life in this book. Every single chapter I read felt like I was there; I was in the same spot as her (which at some points I have been). It's given me the chance to truly open my eyes, because unlike her, I have the title of American on my name, and that title gives me so much privilege. I can go on and on as to why evert single school in California should read this. congress men/women should read this to understand what immigrants really go through. This book has also inspired me to keep on reading more and more, as well as continue my higher education.

reading this book was like looking into her soul

I live in New Mexico. i seen the flight of Mexican immigrants for years. reading this book was like looking into her soul. I felt a sadness just knowing the life she had to endure and how she was put down at a young age simply because her parents were in the states. it was sad,and she and her siblings were strong and stood by each other with courage and conviction, I highly recommend this to all. it's an amazingly true and honest memoir. I truly believe we as a nation are missing out on an opportunity to legally bring these immigrants to the states to work and earn an honest living. Way to go Reyna your book was Awesome. I can't wait to hear you speak and I hope to meet you at San Juan college on the 29th of September.
